I was looking at a map of the freight tunnels in the area below River North, and there is a diagonal water tunnel indicated crossing the river between Clark and LaSalle. I would guess it came from the old water tower on Michigan & Chicago, but where did it go to?

Here is a link to a 2005 talk for the Chicago Literary Club which gives a lengthy critique of Walter Netsch's UIC campus. http://www.uic.edu/master_plan/SomeFieldsAreInTheCity.html The Sunday FC walking tour was a bit glib on the topic of Netsch's Field Theory, but here it is discussed rather clearly with lots of pictures of the building designs which exemplified it. His formal approach exp

Jeff, I work in RMC now in an architect's office. We've been here since 2007, & moved from 7th floor west to 5th floor west last year. What a fabulous location on the river! The landlord has decorated with old photos from (I think) the Daily News archives. One taken from the street level walkway shows the South American tied up. I, along with most other people my age who drove in Chic

WayOut, Since it was retrofitted with a 2nd funnel it's probably the South American. The porthole configuration is similar to the SA. NA has a lot of rectangular portholes

I know the steamer SS South American used to dock at this location along side the Reid Murdoch building, but I don't think this is the South American because it only has one funnel. Can anyone identify this ship?

<Also don't forget Hobbymodels at Devon and Western Avenue> Hobbymodels also had a shop at Davis & Chicago in Evanston. THey had a basement display space for kids' finished models. Tom Thumb is still up Davis Street, still selling models, rockets, & lots of craft supplies. I remember birthday parties there in the early '70's when the space used to have a bunch of slot car tra

Can anyone suggest resources (or post their own photos) which show photos of the old Alba Theatre? The site at 4816 N. Kedzie was a parking lot for many years, and now there are newly built apartments for seniors. I watched the construction crew digging out some terrific old foundations last year, including those at the old Alba building.

My father spent many years living near Eastwood and Kedzie. He remembers a movie house north of Lawrence on the west side of the street. Was it where that new apartment building is being built?

Love that stuff, thanks for the link. Great to see the many, many maps documenting the development of a legendary part of the City. Pamela Bannos did a similar treatment of the old City Cemetary which became Lincoln Park. The sections on the Couch mausoleum are fantastic. http://hiddentruths.northwestern.edu/ Jim Solon

I came across a relic of the old West Chicago Street Railroad system in the Heart of Italy neighborhood. It's on the south side of Coulter Street between Oakley and Leavitt, and looks like it could have been a car barn. Over the center door are the initials "W.C.St.R.R.Co." carved into a limestone inset. The building may have been taller once upon a time, as grade level in this neighbor
