Have been trying to locate a 1950 Chgo & vicinty phonebook Needed to verify the spelling of last names of my childhood friends. Most lived on the 4200-4300 block of Pittsburgh Ave in the temporary veterans housing post WWII. Is there a place that has them? Have been told HW Library does. Have been thru microfilm at Chgo Hist Museum on Clark.

Thatcher disappears in River Grove but reimerges at Berteau. Pioneer becomes Thatcher going north toward Montrose. That's why the temporary veteran village there back in the 40s/50s was called Thatcher Homes. We have a group on facebook for all the kids who grew up there. I stopped by there on Christmas on the way to Park Ridge. And also there are still double street signs at Irving Park to includ

I believe this was prior to 1951. May have been gone by then. It was about the size of a pony league park with maybe a thousand bleacher seats. Think it was north of FPD and east of Harlem. Wasn't much around there then. Don't really recall the outdoor theatre but that was further north yet. There were no shops along Irving for instance until yo got to Harlem and then it was only a fireworks place

Checkout our site on facebook. We have several pics there posted including theone from Historisaerials and one of the demolition. There's also a couple of my brother and I on a pony. This guy used to come around the neighborhood selling photos in the 50s. Have one also of the 1952 KG class at the Canty Branch #1 school that served the kids due to the overcrowding until St. Francis Borgia was built

It mustr have been around 1951 that as a liul kid, we went to a baseball game at a stadium just off Harlem around FP Dr. It had women's baseball leagues..aka A League of Their Own. Am I the only one that remembers it???

All you have to do on the Historicaerials site is type in an address. A current pic will come up. You can then at the left select a given year and at the bottom right zoom in. Not the best quality but interesting nonetheless.

Have a site setup on facebook called ..Thatcher Homes of Norwood Township, IL - Temporary WWII veterans housing. Join us if you lived there or have a grandparent that did. Housing was demolished in 1954. It consisted of quonset & barracks buildings made out of corrugated metal. It was just across Montrose Ave. from Happy Day Stables.

Would love to get a list of folks who lived in the 4200 - 4400 blocks of Pittsburgh Ave. in the late 40s/early 50s. It was a temporary housing for WWII vets. Consisted of barracks & quoset buildings. Also Plainfield Ave. Same addresses.

Also went to a survival weekend at Camp Crete. I think it was some land a farmer let the scouts use back in the day. Used to compete against the Post from the Midwest Buhdist Temple in those years. Our specialty was building rope bridges at all Lincoln Park Council campouts.

Looking for kids who grew up in the vets housing that was at Thatcher/Montrose/Cumberland/Berteau in the late 40s/early 50s. Also would like to get pics from there and then. Have a site on facebook for the former residents of these quonsets/barracks buildings. There were several sites in Chicago area but we're mainly interestd in kids(now in their 60s) from the 'hood'. LOL.
