Does anyone know why there are no addresses in the 1700 S. range on north/south streets in Berwyn and Cicero? I have often wondered.

The lack of 17th St. extends from Western Ave. (2400 W.) all the way to Harlem Ave. (7200 W.) in Berwyn. I never really found out the true reason.

If you look at a map of Chicago, there are actally three streets missing - 17th St, 20th St, and 29th St.

If you measure the distance between Roosevelt Road and Cermak Road, it is exactly one mile. However, according to the addresses, Roosevelt is at 1200 S, while Cermak is at 2200 S. The two streets (17th and 20th) might have been dropped to accomodate the fact that that even though there are "ten blocks" between Roosevelt and Cermak, that it actually indeed is only a mile. Thus, there are 8 sets of block address points between the streets.

Likewise, the distance between Cermak and 31st Street is one mile, though according to the Chicago address system, is "9 blocks." By dropping 29th St, there are exactly 8 blocks of address points between Cermak and 31st St.

(This has always been my guess as to why, though I've never been able to find a credible source with a reason.)

Between 1200s and 3100s the east west steets were laid out long before the Brennan 8 blocks per mile standard.

These streets and addressing are also used in DuPage county by Oak Brook, Lombard, and Downers Grove. Aligned with Roosevelt rd, 22nd and 31st St.
