To the best of my knowledge it originally did end at 55th/Garfield Blvd., but at some point, around 1949 or so it was formally extended to 59th simply in order to take in all of St. Basil parish. We moved there in 1949, and we always were always included in Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council. There were a few of us that delivered the Journal in that area.

I delivered that paper off and on around 1950 until about 1953. I don't really remember how I was paid, but what Richard sais sounds about right. I know it wasn't very much. I delivered in the area of 55th to 59th and Ashland to Wood. As I recall, it came out on Wednesdays or Thursdays. I remember the office of the paper being at 46th and Ashland. That was when the strip mall at 47th and D

Just a couple of comments about old gas stations and former supermarkets. I remember Pure Oil becoming Union 76 some time ago (I remember their commercial ditty "Go with the spirit, the spirit of 76), but interestingly on our numerous drives between Florida and Chicage I have noticed a Pure Oil stations displaying the old logo. I never had time to stop at one, but maybe if I find one on our

Back in the 60''s I landed a small aircraft, Cessna 150, in the back parking lot of the Amphitheatre. It was for display during a sportsman's show of some kind. I also took off in it about 8 or 10 days later.

As a southsider I have no knowldge of that field, but I do remember being taken to Shewbridge Stadium, around 75th and Morgan and owned by Leo High School, to watch women's fast pitch softball in the late 40's or early 50's. I don't clearly remember any of the teams, but I seem to remember my grandmother talking about one of them named the Bloomer Girls. Merry Christmas morning to all.

I went to Kozminsky Elementary School at 53rd and Ellis for Kindergarten through 2nd grade and there was a small store across the street called Ma's School Store that had all kinds of stuff. Ma herself looked very, very old. After that I went to St. Basil Roman Catholic at 55th and honore which had a small school store across the street from the convent on Honore north of Garfield. There wer

But, remember that there are 2 Exchange Avenues in Chicago. West Exchange Ave. about 4130 South which runs from Halsted to about Racine, and South Exchange Ave. on the southeast side which runs southeast from about 71st and South Shore. I guess it could be argued that they do not have the same names, since one is south and the other is west, but it is still unusual. I am pretty sure that West

In case it has not been mentioned, the firehouse on Pulaski and Wilcox is where the riots in 1965 started. As I recall, the hook and ladder left without a tiller man in the back. It swung wide and hit a child, a girl I think. This created a storm of protest on the west side that soon deteriorated into a full scale riot. Fortunately it was of rather short duration. That was actually Chicago's

There seems to be mostly northside dealers being mentioned on here, but a couple I don't remember seeing mentioned that were on the south side were: Ferrell Hcks Chevrolet in the 5700 block of South Ashland, Bonnie Brook Ford in the 5400 block of South Ashland. Burke Ford around 65th and Western and George Bowers Dodge Plymouth around 57th and Sestern. I bought my first new car at a west side de

Thanks Daveg. It seems to me that St. John of God was in operation into the 90's. I seem to remember a large closing ceremony there around that time. It was actually just across the street from Sherman Park. Thanks for the reminder of St. Raphael's. I was fairly certain it was in that area somewhere. It was odd, in that I went to St. Basil at 55 and Honore, and for a year or so lived at

Correct me if I am mistaken, but wasn't St. John of God at about 53rd and Throop or Ada, just north of Sherman Park? Wasn't there a St Rafael's somewhere around the south side. I seem to remember playing them in basketball in the mid 50's or so.

It was always my understanding that the Ford City site had beena Dodge plant during WW II and, as stated by SUPERCFL, was built to manufactury Wright R-3350 engines for B-29 bombers. It was subsequently purchased by Tucker and eventually by Ford. Although Ford did own it at one time, I do not know that they ever manufactured aanything there. That is suposedly where the name "Ford City"

Although Frank Lewis and his wife were hkuge benefactors to Catholic entities, I am not sure the hospital was under the auspices of the Church, but if it was, you might have some luck at the Archdioce. They keep pretty complete records, but you would probably have to search by date, and that may be difficult, if it is even possible.

When I was growing u there was an A and P in the 5500 block of south Ashland avenue. It was actually 2 store fronts, perhaps 2000 square feet, certainly puny by today's standards. There was no parking lot because as someone else pointed out back then most shoppers walked to stores in the neighborhoos. In later years there was a Del Farm store in the 4500 block of South Kedzie. Del Farm, as I r

I don't know if this counts because the buildings hve been demolished, but the building, actually twin buildings, we lived in during the late 40's and early 50's, the Hyde Park Towers at 810 and 818 Hyde Park Blvd had 2 elevators in each building. Since the building was built as accommodations for the Colomian Exposition, I assume that the elevators dated from that time. The 2 passenger elevator

I can think of 2 that were on the southside: Dressels, in Bridgeport, on Emerald or Union, I think. In my family a cake from Dressels was always a birghday treat. The other, if memory serves me correctly, was Schmitz in the 55 or 56 hundred block of Ashland. There is still what I believe is German bakery in Evergreen Park, Wolf's, just west of Kedzie on the south side of 95th Street. Wolf's h
