The Patio was built in 1927, was open until about 2001 when attendance was low and they couldnt afford to fix the AC. It's sat for 10 years and was reopened by the original owners son. Again, check it out !

Anyone here been to the newly reopened Patio Theatre on Irving and Austin? I used to go there alot as a kids & teenager. They've recently reopened showing relatively newer movies and only charge $5. I went last night, and wow, it was like walking into a time warp! It's still a beautiful old style theatre with 1500 seats, with twinkling stars and moving clouds on the ceiling. Everything was EXA

I remember the Treasure Chest on Randolph in the late 60s-early 70s. It's here in the front of the place where I bought "sneezing powder", "Red-Hot Gum",(fool your friends!!!), and various other gags. The game area in back used to be pretty harmless, but eventually it became a little scary. Remember "Shoppers Corner" on State and Randolph? Where else could you buy ch

When I was growing up in thye 60's, NOTHING was open on Sundays except Walgreens. And the 2 week nights where stores were open till 9 pm were on Mondays and Thursdays only. Nowadays we can buy anything, anytime, spending $ for crap we dont really need and probably cant afford!.

Does anyone know the actual location of Robinsons original homestead? There are several theories, but even the FP district or the local so-called "historical society" wont tell, stating they dont want to encourage"vandalism". On that NETR Online Historic Imagery site from 1938 or so I was able to glimpse a few small farmhouses north of Lawrence, east of River. Just curious.

Does anyone remember the old green U.S.Mail boxes? When I was growing up in the 50s and 60s there used to be mail drop boxes in the neighborhoods. Instead of going to the post office one could just walk at most a block or two to mail a letter. But also, in the neighborhoods as well, there were these same-sized, but green mail boxes. They were locked and it wasnt a drop box as they had no slot to i

And honestly, as for "seeing" a house, I'd recommend having your eyes checked. See, THIS is what keeps the urban legends going, encouraging like minded people to "go to BG" and experience "the most haunted cemetary in the world"! Yeah? I've seen NO credible proof of ANYTHING going on,and the lack of any kind of credible facts bears this out. It's all a delusion. Crow

Sorry, but all the hub bub about Bachelors grove is NOTHING MORE than imaginations running wild. After doing extensive research and numerous BG visits, it became obvious to me that the only "mysterious" thing related to BG was the amazing power of urban legends and the overwhelming obsession of people to believe. . All the stories, "sightings", and so-called paranormal activity

I dont remember the clothing article you're asking about, but I do remember Starks. I had a friend that would always buy their Navy Oxford shoes, and it's where we would buy old Army surplus pea coats and other stuff. My Starks was across from the Harlem Irving Plaza but there was another Starks somewhere on south Harlem.

Remember the citys attempt to have people do recycling? The Blue Bag thing? As I recall it failed miserably, and rightly so.

The store on Milwaukee was "Deluxe Music". It had to have dated back to the 50s because they had the listening stations to listen to records, mostly 45s. We would go there in the early 70s to find hard to find 45s and albums.

We used to go to the Kiddeeland just north of the harlem irving Plaza on harlem. They had a train that went all the way around the exterior and thru a tunnell, a Tilt-A-Whirl, a game room, and years ago, pony rides. We used to collect Bowman milk bottle tops and get 2 for 1 ride tickets which were 15 cents each. Torn down in late 60s to build Unity Bank.

From the many books I've read about Chicagos'past, the ONE thing that's never changed is the corruption. You can marvel at the amazing development, the massive industries, the turning of a small "frontier" town into one of the worlds biggest industrial cities...And all along, the undercurrent of massive governmental corruption. Hell, todays' scandals look like childs play compared to th

The "Mr.G's" store on 58th just east of the el tracks used to be "Bathcellars Pool Hall" as mentioned in Farrells books. This area literaly developed overnight. I researched some Sanborn Fire maps, and according to them in 1896 there was absolutely nothing except bare land. The 1915 maps show buildings and stores from corner to corner. There was even a movie theatre on Prairi

222psm,you said "About the same way I remember it.". What do you know of this area? Yes, it's sad to see what its' become, but my only experience about how it was is from books and research I've read. I noticed if you look at Google Maps or Google Earth you'll notice that these few square blocks are the worst. A little south or west you'll see more stable areas, (houses vs empty lots) ju

Thanks for asking. There was a famous writer, James T. Farrell, that grew up right around 58th and Prairie in the early 1900s. He wrote numerous books regarding his youth, the most famous being "Studs Lonigan" and his "Danny O'Neill pentalogy. In these books he distincly describes the neighborhood,it's apartment buildings, the stores, the "hang-outs",etc. In Studs Lonigan,

This location has had a new owner about every year or two,so even though it's open again under a new name, its no longer mr.gs. This is 4 blocks west of the Patio theatre.
