According to some 1972 aerial of 55th & Pulaski. The 40-foot sign was on the SE corner of that intersection. A tall & wide sign apparently.

I do believe that place is still some sort of fashion or clothes shop. But it looked like a record shop or music store at one time, What was that place long ago?. If anyone knows?.

Not too helpful. But I would believe that place was either a barber shop, beauty salon, etc. But rather unusual, Since it was obviously the only business on that block, When the rest were more private residences. Certainly on many side streets you had taverns, grocery stores, factories, schools, churches.

The correct spelled name was Kars, And it WAS a great old-line variety store. It was also kind of like going into an antique store, Sort of say. Like seeing a 1968 Dating Game home board game, Late 1960's Colgate 100 mouthwash, 1940's Tintex Dye & so on. The place unfortunately closed in 1983.

That was not Olson Rug, That was Walton Rug (circa 1963). The Honey sign you're probably referring to was just north of Foster for Lake Shore Honey.

Yes, I remember that place. It closed during the 1970's. But the building, Along with the whole block was demolished in 1990.

Until about 1968 or 69, I had a vague memory of an Atlas Insurance Building at the SE corner of Chicago & Paulina. I don't remember how tall the building was. Many years ago at 55th & Pulaski there was a Gas City flagship station. They boasted that the had the "largest sign in Chicago", 40 feet tall. If anyone can remember that sign. Describe how the 40 foot sign stood? I remember a Gas City station in that vicinity. But don't remember the large 40 foot sign.

They demolished that half because another more extensive fire damaged the Brown & Koppel Restaurant main partition in early 1976. There was a fire there once, The second time was more extensive I guess. Yes, It was pretty unwise to demolish the western half, IMO.
