My mother-in-law was in town for a visit this past weekend. I had sent her the book when it was first published. She was very impressed with the pictures, history and stories told in the book. I heard "I didn't know that" several times. She gave it a thumbs up.

For those of us who couldn't make it, can we get a summary of what went on at the McKinley Park presentation last Saturday. Thanks.

Hope the link works. If not then search google books for: Chicago: Its History and Its Builders, a Century of Marvelous Growth, Vol. 4 Josiah Seymour Currey 1912 S.J. Clarke Publishing Company, Chicago pages 417-419 Article on Joseph Noel, founder of the bank in 1905 then called North West Savings Bank. Note that the article uses Robey instead of Damen to describe the location of

Corner of North, Damen and Milwaukee. No longer a bank, but was told it was quite a facility - huge domed ceiling, etc. Gangster ghosts? Would like to learn more about this place. TIA.

Wonderful pictures and descriptions (again) Frank. Houses looks good as new. The stretch of mowed lawns, very nice.

I recall an Oldsmobile dealer on Ogden. It was on the north side of the street, I forget the intersection, but I think it might have been east of Central Park. It had a rather tall rocket ship sign that flashed in a sequence making the rocket appear to be taking off. Big stuff for a kid in the 50s.

I saw a picture of a VG in the newly published book on the Lawndale-Crawford community. It was created by the folks at Home Run Inn at 4254 W 31st street. The author of the above book hangs out here and may chime in. I will gladly yield to him. Good luck.

The Trib had a little blurb on the Chicago smelt season a few days ago. They showed a picture of a bunch of smelt on a platter, heads and all. The author said he tried them. Once. He was told to eat the "entire" smelt. I guess that's where the "once" came from.

The Trib this morning had a page 1 article on the census. North Lawndale's return rate was 46%, which if it holds at that number, further drags that community down. This morning I read a story about a shooting on 25th and Christiana yesterday. A 13 year old boy was shot in the foot and a man in the thigh.

Wow alex2437, living in the Shedd house. I lived on 24th and St Louis, just a few blocks away back in the 50s and never knew about such things. I do vaguely recall Shedd park though. Of course I was just a kid and worried more about baseball and staying out of trouble with the nuns at BA. ;-) Good luck on your quest for more information on the house.

Here is a link to the South Lawndale community Wikipedia page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Lawndale,_Chicago Towards the bottom there is an External links section one of which is the "official" city of Chicago map of the community. The map doesn't show Cermak (22nd) to be exactly the north border but it seems to parallel the IC tracks that are the south border, somewhat o

Maybe this can turn into an official Forgotten Chicago event. I'd still insist on Home Run Inn though. ;-) BTW, I finished the book in one sitting. Couldn't put it down.

After posting my previous note, I had a thought. Wondered if anyone might be interested in getting together somewhere (Home Run Inn?) to share stories and discuss the book. I know it may be hard to schedule but I think it might be a fun thing to do. Maybe in a month or two after we get a chance to digest the book? Heck, I wouldn't mind having my book signed by the author !!

Ordered 4 last week from Amazon. They have shipped and should be delivered within a few days. I grew up in what is now called Little Village back in the 50s - 24th and St. Louis. Many simply called the neighborhood "26th Street". Went to BA (now named St. Agnes of Bohemia) grammar school through the 7th grade. Family moved in 1960. Took our youngest daughter on a tour a few wee

Gertie's was on 59th and Kedzie. Good location right by the Colony. Not sure if this was urban legend or not by one of their creations -- the Tummy Buster -- was free if you (and only you) could finish it.
