I remember both well. Hayden's crash happened during a bad rainstorm-he used to have a traffic segement on WGN on Saturday mornings, as well as the traffic copter reports. I believe it happened in August of 1971-same day that a tree fell on my car from the same storm

Had a Polk-a-lay-lee. My late mother actually worked with Sol Polk at the 1933-1934 Chicago World's Fair. I beleive it was called the "Streets of Shanghai".Sol Polk was at my bar mitzvah in 1962-gave me a transitor radio, a huge deal back then

Wasn't there a Neisner's on Clark street, just north of Belmont, on the east side of the street that I seem to recall burned down in a huge fire around 1960 or 1961?

Well think about it for a moment. You had the streetcars running down Halsted street there, with the red brick pavement. Grand at that time, I hope I am correct, probably had trolley buses, with its overhead. You had streetcars running on Milwaukee so just consider the imposing overhead connections of various wires and switches. Then consider the trackage configurations with switches and crossing

The Alba Theater became the Alba-A-Go-Go in the late 1960"s. My best friend lived across the alley behind it and on Saturday nights when we had to babysit his younger sister, the noise was deafening. But a good place to meet girls once his parents came home

The Johan models were notorious for warping. Back in the 1980"s I believe they were re-released under Johan Ex-L models which didn't warp. I actually have a 1/25th scale 1955 Plymouth Johan model, an original which hasn't warped.

Just as an aside-remember the 1/25th scale plastic model promotional cars from Johan and AMT? I remember buying those as a kid at the drugstore at tne end of my block at Newport and Sheffield, as well as dime stores.

I used to go to All Nations on lunch in the late 1960's. Also don't forget Hobbymodels at Devon and Western Avenue. Downtown Hobby was at State and Randolph on the second floor and later moved to the arcade at First National Plaza before moving out to Northwest Highway.

Just a follow up, if you go to the C.E.R.A. Members Blog for December 6, 2013, the 9th photo down the page will give you some idea of how the corner looked. I know the PCC streetcar is in the way but just to the left of the Green Hornet and beyond the Flixible bus is the corner

There used to be several stores including a grocery store by the name of Gikas Brothers, a bakery (I can't recall the name) and a toy store on the southwest corner.

It later, in the mid 1960's became the Alba A-G0-GO. It was just next door to a kosher deli,

Sort of on point. My first law job was at 54 West Randolph St across from the Daley Center, actually called the Woods Theater Building. Up until the very late 60's, it still had the iron grate open elevators and operators. In fact, the lobby was used in the Warren Beaty movie, Mickey One.

If we are bringin up evening shows-why not one of the best-"Superman" with the best Superman, George Reeves. As an aside, wasn't there also a Chicago TV character, I seem to remember at noon, with the now policitcally incorrect name of "Uncle Johnny Coons"? 16" softball or how about pinners with a "pinkie"

M Squad, I believe, filmed some outdoor scene. Marvin drove a 1957 Ford unmarked squad car. Aren't we also forgetting Frazier Thomas. I remember watching Commander Cody on Sunday mornings and Lynn Burton "for certain" hawked the used cars brought into the studio. One more-Andy Starr (aka Bob Bell) hosting the 3 Stooges in the afternoons-he was the janitor/proprietor of a movie theater an

Mr Downtown and Robspost, thanks for the replies. Being a member of both CERA and Shoreline, I appreciate the additional information. Can't wait for the PCC book to come out but the photos on the CERA Blog are great.

I had the advantage of growing up on Newport in Wrigleville in the 1950's. I was able to ride the red streetcars on Halsted and the Green Hornets on Clark. The Clark cars went downtown on Clark, turned around in the South Loop and went back north on Dearborn, loading at safety islands. They were fast. By the way, the only surviving Green Hornet #4391, is preserved at the Illinois Railway Museum in

I attended Amundsen from 1963-1967. Mayfair City College had night classes in part of the building. Off topic, I was the last CPS January graduating class and graduated from Amundsen the night of the 1967 blizzard

I went to Budlong School in the early 60's and graduated in 1963, Last January class. I was a patrol boy so we got hot chocolate on really cold days. I only ever went home for lunch and didn't buy lunch at any cafeteria until High School. There was no airconditioning and I recall one May when it was over 90 and really hot.

Or Sheridan & Devon where the Granada Theater was, or Berwyn and Broadway, where there was a coal yard, served by CTA electric locomotives that ran at night. Or for that matter, that there was a coal yard next to WWrigley Field. Or the Nortown theater on Western. Just a few of many places lost.

I want to say that Clark Equipment was at Balmoral and River Road, I do know that it was due south of the largest hotel, at the time, and on the southwest corner. My dad retired from there in 1985 but I can remember having to go out there in 1967 and dig his car out of the parking lot. I also remember that Clark's original buidling in Chicago was bisected by the Greyhound roller coaster.

You could be right-that area has changed so much since Clark moved out there around 1964 or so, from Belmont and Western, since it was then located on the grounds of Riverview at Roscoe.

Maybe a touch off topic but I remember when I began working as an office boy at a law firm in the Woods Theater Building (54 West Randolph) it still had the iron grate elevators with operators.

I remember Heur's but wasn't it a little further south? My father worked for Clark Equipment in Rosemont and they had their X-mas parties there.

Not a station according to Chicago L-I believe it was a substation. Have you ever looked at the west bank of the Chicago River (south) between Jackson & Van Buren. You can still see remnants of the pliling from the drawbridge.
