Ha!! I thought I was the the only one to remember "Big Dick Allen". Harry was at his best with the Sox. Especially with Piersall. "Jimmy takes pills to keep his hyper down, I just open another Falstaff!!" Spectrum cost around 30 bucks a month. And had an attractive large multi-pronged antenna mounted on the wall INSIDE the house, sticking straight out about eight inches. Put a

The White Sox in red pinstripes. Dick the Bruiser and Felix the cat. I remember being one of the few who chose Spectrum over On TV. What a ripoff they both were. Everyone in the country had catv before Chicago. Think it was around 1986 when Chicago, proper had cable. The suburbs had it long before then.

In the bucktown area there are several buildings with bulls heads protruding from their facades. Often thought they were old butcher shops, but this questions begs a little more research. Have to look into it further as time allows. Have to say, time isn't allowing for much these days.

Another facet of city life that seems to be fading away. Most became run down flophouses and were either razed or converted to condos. The Bel-Ray at Belmont and Racine is an example of condo conversion. Also I think many were closed due to increased regulations stemming from the tragic fire at the Paxton.

Calumet412 is pretty interesting. Haven't even gone through it all, but what Ive seen is excellent. Also Chicago Daily News photos up to 1930 has been around for a while and also a must see. Cushman also has great color shots from the forties up. All can be googled. And well worth it.

I believe it was to be condos, what else? Like the old Florsheim factory up the street. Also, it may be on the "protected list". Seems to me I read that somewhere. It appears to have new glass. Likely the developers ran out of money. As far as the difference in tax, I do not think it matters if the property is vacant or not. Buildings depreciate in value but the property they stand on in

Ive heard it was to be torn down. I drive it at least three times a week and hope they leave it alone. Traffic is bad enough over there, without it it would be a disaster. They have razed the United American Cab Co headquarters on Belmont and Clybourn, and I heard maybe the 19th district police station may go also. More banks and CVS or perhaps a condo to replace them. UGH!

Just in the last year or so, saw a piece on, I think, abc local news about the Tip-Top-Tap. Showed the inside as it is today. Probably can find it on youtube. Tip-Top-Tap seems rather ridiculous today as there couldn't be much of a view unless you are a voyeur. But at one time it was the tallest building on north Michigan.

At one time they owned the whole corner. Liquor store, restaurant and hot dog stand. Used to stop at the hot dog stand after work almost daily. Really good food. Me and a buddy walked in the back door off the parking lot one night and saw something we shouldn't have. If looks could kill. The hell with the six pack, lets get the hell outta here. Last I saw it was just a take out pizzeria. Been at l

Yes I remember Ewald's on Southport. Kind of a small place. Herdegen was on Lincoln just northwest of Diversey. Powell's used book store occupies the site now. Herdegen joined forces with Brieske on Southport, Lincoln and Wellington. Went to St. Alphonsus with his daughters. I think the old Cooneys on Southport is now Lakeview funeral home next to St Lukes. In a different area, Andersons on North

I seem to remember the one on Western south of Addison being named "Dennis" but don't believe it was part of the chain. Space Fantasy on Broadway and Granville was another one. Think there was another one, name escapes me on north Clark up around Touhy. I think that may have been a Dennises also. Times Square could get a little dicey, way different neighborhood then. And of course the Ad

Very interesting. Perhaps there was a Frank Petges junior? My first thought was it may be a beer bottle. The bottle is aqua tinted which made me think it wasn't. After doing a little research, I discovered many beer bottles from this era were aqua tinted as opposed to brown or green. So I would say it was beer. Funny, I collect old breweriana and didn't spot it. And the date would match up as it i

A couple months ago I posted a question about an old bottle I found many years ago. The bottle reads FRANK PETGES 1050 Argyle Chicago Ill. Thanks to several of you, I was able to piece together some, but not all of this puzzle. Mr Petges seems to be somewhat of a typical gutsy Chicagoan. As far as I can research, he lived in a rooming house on southport circa 1890, Bought his own home at 1310 argy

Thanks for the info. And, yes everyone that I ever heard discuss the place described it as HUGE! I suppose as kids, everything looks larger. Usually stop for a beer across the street after work next to the old Henry's Hamburger joint and wondered where the entrance was. Thanks again!

Went to the Will Rogers many times. Mostly Disney type movies in the early seventies but graduated to 'Jaws' and 'Saturday night fever' later on. Was way out of my neighborhood. Lived in lakeview, where most theaters were going out like the Belmont, Century, Parkway. The Music Box was considered a dump, now it is gladly still open. The Commodore was also well past its prime when I was there. The N

Does anyone know where Mills Stadium was. Several big boxing matches were held there in the twenties and thirties. Found a few references to it on the net, but not the exact location. HELP!!!!

Have many family members resting there. We used to pay a visit there annually, and invariably got lost inside the place. The visits stopped when everyone who took the trip wound up there and I didn't feel the need to go by myself! No one left to give directions! Just found a deed to a plot the family owns there, so I just found it ironic that this thread popped up. Mostly Scandinavian cemetery. Ca

Having been closed when I was two, and always in the area these days I wonder if anyone can tell me where the main entrance was. Near as I can figure it was just south of Roscoe on Western. Im curious as to the exact location.

Thanks Mornac. You're sure less expensive than a therapist. But I recall Old Abe into the early seventies. Maybe 73 or so. Still would like to know the company that produced it. Lassers?

Does anyone remember the name of a ginger ale with a picture of a penny on the label? It was sold in quart bottles. I want to say it was called Old Abe or something close to that. Was discussing this with someone who thinks Im nuts, but I remember this clearly except the name. Pretty sure it was made by a local bottler.

Kchi pretty much summed it up nicely. Another facet of business ownership are the guys hauling in a juke, poker machine or pinball machine without ever asking for it. Kicked them out of my place machine and all. Funny thing, a week later I received a registered letter stating my license was issued in error and I would have to close. Often wonder if there was a connection?
