trying to locate a building on Belmont

I've been told that there is/was an exact copy somewhere on Belmont of this building, which is located on the north side of the the 3200 block of Bryn Mawr. I don't know exactly when the Bryn Mawr building was built, but the black and white photo was dated 1935 and was identified as located on Bryn Mawr in a book. I am interested in any historical information about the building. Thank you.

Fran, I think Vern H is correct. It looks like the building which housed the old Dayan's Store, which is now a Family Dollar Store.

The architect of both the Belmont Ave. and Bryn Mawr buildings was Edward P. Steinberg. I can't find the exact date the Bryn Mawr building was built but the Belmont building (the old Dayan's store) was built in 1929. Mr. Steinberg also designed a few movie theaters in the Chicago area.

Here's another building, built in 1929 by Edward P. Steinberg in downtown Hinsdale (112 - 114 S. Washington Street).

And another building on Devon and Claremont mentioned in West Ridge Bungalows Blog (scroll half way down the page to see image).

The building on Bryn Mawr dates from 1930. Just a warning... The link listed below takes a while to download but you will find a photo and a blurb about the building on page 30 of the PDF file.

I seem to recall the Belmont ave. store as being a DIME store in the early 60's.

Jazzman; There was a dime store, an S. S. Kresge, west of Central at 5626-28 W. Belmont. It burned down in June of 1976. Both Dayan's and Kresge's were wonderful old stores with well-worn wooden floors you just don't see any more these days. I remember after that fire that the Goldblatt's store, which was just a few doors down from Kresge's, smelled like smoke for ages afterward.

Vern; I haven't had any luck so far in finding out much about that building on on Northwest Hwy. I'll keep digging, though.

I've discovered another E.P. Steinberg Building in Park Ridge... Woolworth's once occupied the building. It is located at approximately 27 S. Prospect Ave..
