St. Anne's, Garfield & Wentworth

Does anyone have a photo of St. Anne's Church, on the corner of Garfield and Wentworth? I remember often passing it on the Ryan and noticed the visible holes in the roof. Not long after, there was a Tribune article about its pending demolition that had nice photos of the ruin inside.

The rectory and school building are still standing, but nothing's gone up on the lot where the church stood.

I do have a picture of a postcard that had been on ebay. It actually shows more of the rectory and either the convent or school than the church itself, due to the angle from which the picture was taken. I'm afraid I do not know how to post it on here though unless it was in Flickr.

that's a tough one....I know the Chi Public Libary has an Englewood archive and I'm sure there are some St. Anne's references there.

There should be pictures of it in a book that the CPL has, as do many of the suburban libraries. It's the History of the Archdiocese of Chicago, a 2 volume treasure trove of pictures and information about every parish in the Archdiocese of Chicago. It was printed a good few years ago, so most of the closed ones are in there and of course the more recently opened ones are not included.

Result page:
Title A history of the parishes of the Archdiocese of Chicago : published in observance of Centenary of the Archdiocese, 1980
Pub.Info. Chicago, Ill. : The Archdiocese, c1980.

There's a picture in the Chicago Daily News Archives as well:

Beyond that, I'd keep checking ebay for a postcard to show up.

From the Daily News Archive...courtyard of St. Anne's Church...possibly school in background, church to the right, and rectory or convent to the left.

Garfield and Wentworth - present - the rectory or convent building is still standing and is now "Chicago City Church"

I'll have to take a look at that Archdiocese book the next time I'm at the library, for sure.

The courtyard sure did change, although the rectory looks pretty much the same; too bad the porch disappeared.

As fate would have it, today I stumbled upon this photo on Flickr while looking for something completely unrelated:

I like that the steeple mirrors the District 2 comm tower at 51st St.

just curious as to whether or not they rerouted part of the Dan Ryan to avoid the path of St.Annes'...like was the case with the Kennedy and St Stan Kostka and Holy Trinity...would be ironic if that was the case, seeing that it is now gone

You might be on to something...it passes by St. Anne's and the former St. Martin of Tours at 59th St. quite nicely...

I dug up a re-route map of Ryan that shows the initial and revised route...the two red dots would be St. Martins and St Annes...St. Martins didn't seem all that affected, but its interesting to note that St Annes was smack in the middle of both the intial and revised routes

the most obvious re-route was the one that went straight through Daley's Bridgeport neighborhood

This is from the St. Elizabeth's Church (41st St) website:

'St. Elizabeth Church was organized to serve Irish Catholics who settled in the area. On November 19th 1881 - the feast day of St. Elizabeth of Hungary - a frame structure which had served for many years as St. Anne Church was rolled from 55th and Wentworth to a new site on Dearborn near Root St and 41st by Rev. Daniel J. Riordan who paid $550 for moving service, but the church was donated.'

my sister,brother-in-law and i just passed by this spot 2 weeks ago and i was telling them was used to be there.
when i was young and driving the dan ryan, saint ann's was one of my markers just like saint martins at 59th (which has lost the horse on the roof). loretta englewood at the curve on 63rd and the ryan was another marker. at one time you could see saint columbanus on 71st also.

St. Anne's was later known as St. Charles Lawanga.

When I was looking for a photo of the Hyde Park Towers, I was advised to check for postcard or photo on Ebay. That falls into the "Why didn't I think of that myself," category. 10 minutes later Ihad a negative that I wanted ordered. Give it a try.

I was a student at St. Anne's School at Garfield & Wentworth in the 40's and graduated in 1953. I enrolled as a non-Catholic and was baptized in 3rd grade, I believe.

I loved that Church and remember Father Dunne was the Pastor at that time.

The picture of the courtyard is the school and the convent with the church in the right background.

My name was Jean Skinner. Anyone out there attended St Anne's?? I'll be glad to answer any questions? I, too, would see the church from the Dan Ryan every day while traveling to work and was very sad when it was torn down.

I am so happy that the Church was remembered!

Jean

Hi Jean,
I have come across a pretty decent photo of the church taken in 1963. Enjoy!
