He Rich,

Glad you hung in there. You and I knew some of the same people like Roger Casper who bought my cousins tavern in the 70's The old Town Club tavern and Roger changed it to the Hideaway. The Rebels hung out at your park (Cornell) and came to our park once in awhile (Oakley Playground).
The good old days.

Anyone remember the "SWAMPS" behind the ball fields on 47th & Damen. WE would go there during recess and build rafts. Sometimes we even stayed dry. If you know what I mean. Ha! Ha! Our nuns at St Michaels would be furious when we came back late or wet. Again that was the fun days.

How about the hobby shop on 47th North side of the street 2 blocks East and the greasy spoon chilli restraunt nextdoor. We would go there during recess and after school to buy airplane or boat models. We would go to the greasy spoon for chilli once a week if we could ditch going to lunch at the school convent.

Rich, you mentioned Mrs Sarna. Didn't they own the tavern on the corner of 47th and Damen?

I don't know if it's the same one. I had a friend Bobby Sarna from 49th & Wolcott also.

Im 70, but it looks like we know some of the same people, same places and the same things. Some things never change in the Yards.

We all have great memories for sure of the yards. I went trough the area lately and it's nothing like it was but the house I was born in is still there. 4930 s. Justine.

My dad grew up at 47th & Justine a few doors down from the corner on the East side of the street. St Rose Alima was done at the end of the street. The family owned the home until 1956 when the oldest of his brothers moved.

Do you remember the Settlement House on 46th?

I remember the settlment house on McDowell. Also St Roses was on the North East corner on 48th & Ashland . That was the old church when I was a kid. Later they built the new brick on east of it and took the old one down.

My Dads brother and his family went to St Roses until 1956, however, my Aunt from my Moms side stayed at St Roses until the 80's. I remember going to their carnivals. What was the clothing store across the street? I also remember the wedding store on the West side of the street. Marges I believe.

Rich, I now remember the two clothing stores names, however, was that church on Ashland? I sure can't remember it.

I love this forum. It's like taking a quiz. Good for our minds especially when your talking about things 60 -70 years ago.

I remember my parents supported/pledge building a rec/social center for St Michaels and my brother and I never had a chance to use it. Is it still there?

Every year St Michaels put on a school play, costumes and all. Of course everyone just about had to join. I wonder if schools do that now.
