South Side Delicatessens?

Tangent to the South Side restaurant thread...

Maybe it's because the racial transition of the neighborhoods happened so long ago, but there isn't much in the way of nostalgia for delicatessens in neighborhoods like Hyde Park or South Shore.

Occasionally, I see someone request a recipe for the Alexander's Steak House salad dressing, but that's about it.

The holdout seems to be Morry's but I can only imagine it's a shell of its former self these days. They seem to do a brisk lottery ticket business, though.

So, what and where were they?

I think Morry's is doing pretty well. They actually even have a website, and you heard it here, PBS financial guru Suze Orman's dad founded it (she's a south shore gal rather than Hyde Park iirc)!

I'll ask - my boss grew up in HP and has mentioned a deli in HP.

Yep, you are correct...I think she was a classmate of Mandy Patinkin.

Mandy Patinkin went to Kenwood, not sure that Suze did (in fact, pretty sure she didn't).

My neighbor was a classmate of the financial guru at South Shore HS during the late 60s.

Ah, thanks for the correction!

Is Morry's still in the Orman family, does anyone know?

Their website doesn't say, but I tend to think not. Or else it'd be a side of financial advice rather than fries...

Not Hyde Park, but Marquette Manor, right across from the park, was Howie's. He had so little business he closed it down when I was about 7 or 8. It was a block or two east of Kedzie on the north side of Marquette Road.

The was another on 63rd, south side of the street, about a block and a half east of Kedzie. Polansky's, I think.
