Clarke House Museum

Have you ever visited the Clark House Museum? If you have, I would be most interested to read your comments.

Its pretty cool, was even featured on a local TV show yesterday...Chicagos oldest building (only by a few years, there are other contenders here on the south side that seem to date from the 1830's as well) has been moved twice..in the 1960's the clarke House was a church on about 43rd street and to move it to its present location (not far from where it first stood) required lifting it up and over some train tracks.My buddy CJ Martello is a docent there and at Glessner House

It must have been a startling sight for El riders to see the Clarke house dangling from a crane, next to the El tracks; when the house was being moved to its present location, and had to be lifted over the tracks.

They didn't use a crane, but rather hydraulic jacks and cribbing. Problem was that they did it in the bitter winter of 1977 and the jacks froze, stranding the house high in the air next to the L for a week.

It was a delicate move for a house built in 1836.

Houses and churches of that period were often built with a substantial center beam making moving 'em that much more practical. "Those old houses weighed about as much as a Volkswagen" an older architect once told me.
