i Love the 1920s Chicago architecture. Any comments? What might that huge pipe have been used for at the corner of the building? Also, what does the 'V' stand for that you see on many old buildings from that period? Im sure Frank can expand on that. http://www.flickr.com/photos/49039954@N05/5001249210/

Nice looking building, from a great design era in our history. I think the pipe is nothing but a large sign standard, although now it serves as a bird house. That convertible top boot has to be from dad's '59, he was pretty cool to buy a rag-top!

Thanks B.a. ,,agreed- a standard pipe base for a sign im sure and ,yes, a great bird house,,lol. Ah,,you saw the rag top cover eh? It was from a 59 Impala.
I hope Frank comes across these pics. Id really like to hear what he has to say,,especially about the 'V' adornment.

Artista, great pictures! I LOVE 1920s architecture! My hometown Berwyn is FILLED with it!

Ok, I did a little research and I found that the occupants of the building in 1929 were J.J. Olk Drugstore which occupied the bottom floor. A dentist, Roger Corrin was probably upstairs in the corner flat.

I may be wrong but I believe the V may have been the last initial of the original owner/one who had the building built. Maybe you are mistaking the V for the Y commonly used in Chicago architecture symbolizing the Chicago river and its branches? Maybe I am wrong on this one?

I LOVE the Monte Clair area where this building is located. I have collected some vintage images from this area and will add more to this thread tomorrow.

By the way I love the image of the 59 Impala rag top! Is that you in the photo? You just tapped into my other love which is vintage American iron! I have had several old Chevies!

very cool pics Artista, I just love those old buildings. And like Berwyn Frank I love late 50's and 60's cars. Two of my uncles had 59 Impalas, they were both 2 door hard tops. My dad had a 61 Ford Galaxie, later on my uncle that lived in pilsen had a 75 Buick Electra 225 2 door, those cars were like tanks!

FRANK there you are, good to see you 'how ya doin'?!? Thanks for the input,,i am very familiar with the Chicago building 'Y' emblems around town. I question the 'V' because there is a building right down the street at Grand and Harlem that has a 'V' emblem as well and from the same time period. Ill post those pics ASAP. 222 glad you liked the pix,,good to see you too my friend.

By the way ,the photograph of the two kids in front of the 59 Impala belongs to a friend of mine and those are her kids.

Here you go Frank and everyone..7172 W. Grand.(whats left of it) The intersection of Grand and Harlem ave. As you can see there is a 'V' adornment as well and here just down the street from 6967-69 Grand . I find this to be very interesting. Frank we have a mystery.

Artista, I am kind of puzzled as to what the V means. I will have to do some research on that.

I know you're gonna like this. I am going to post some rare real photo post cards of the area from my collection.

Here is a view of the corner of Grand & Harlem circa 1908. The building was owned by John W. Thompson who had a general store there and also dealt in real estate.

Here is another of the corner of Grand & Oak Park Ave.'s circa 1908.

This one is right up your alley. This is the Masonic Temple at 6910 W. Grand circa 1925.

Here it is today.

I am well aware of the Masonic Temple there on Grand. Ive always liked its facade. Ill take comparison pics and post them..So we do have a mystery on our hands concerning the 'V' eh? Could it have something to do with the builders?

That's what I am thinking Artista. I could be wrong about the V though. That is a perfect mystery for the administrators of Forgotten Chicago. They are very good at figuring out these oddities like sidewalk stamps and that.

That pic of the corner of Grand and Oak Park is amazing, It was literally "out in the country". Now I know why they called the Dunning Hospital the country farm, I assuming the view is west on Grand. here's it is today for those of us no longer in Chicago.

That intersection has the 'red light camera' installed. Every once in a while ill see the camera flash when someone tries to beat the light. Thats a $100 fine friends.

Frank, Thanks for the great picture of Grand and Harlem. I grew up in Elmwood Park and I love to see old pictures of it.
