Another head-scratcher: Peterson Park

Any ideas about the original purpose of the forgotten little shack in Peterson Park at the corner of Peterson and Central Park? Perhaps just a storage place for CPD now, but I've never seen anyone use it. The boarded up windows make me think that this was once used for some other purpose. Photo link below.

According to a family member who had a friend living at the sanitarium, it was a guardpost. They'd search the belongings of and issue passes to visitors.
