I was recently crossing the bridge on Central Avenue just south of Grand. When I looked to the east, I saw Prosser Career Academy (see photo below). It looked like a beautiful old building, so I went in for closer inspection. Unfortunately, it looks like an addition has been built in front of the building, blocking the view of the original building, and I couldn't get near the old facade. I went all the way around the school and couldn't find a way to get in front of the original building.

Does anyone have information on this building and whether it can be accessed from the front?

I don't know about access, but I do know that it was the original Hanson Park Elementary School.Unfortunatly I don't know when it was built. The open space around it used to be a "park", but it was orginally allotment gardens for the surrounding neighborhoods, nicknamed the cabbage patch. This is why it isn't properly landscaped like most other Chicago parks.

I went to Prosser when it was Prosser Vocational high school. The original building and entrance way is located at 2148 N. Long Avenue. East of Central ave. Was a GREAT HS during those older days. Not sure about now.

According to a Tribune article, when Prosser Vocational School moved into the old Hanson Park School in 1959,the building was 41 years old, which would mean it was built in 1918. Apparently when the new Hanson Park School was being built, there was a controversy over the School name. The school board wanted to rename the school after PaulDrymalski, a former city treasurer and member of the schoolboard who died in 1944, while parents wanted to keep the 'Hanson Park'name. An addition was to be added to the school and Prosser was supposed to have 10 shops, 14 classrooms 3 drafting rooms ,2 labs,a library, and a gym.

I don't know if Prosser was located somewhere else before it moved to its current location or if there were further additions to the building after 1959.

In a 1923 article, there was a trial over land the city school board leased around Hanson Park School at well below value. One of the lawyers in the case was Clarence Darrow of the Scopes Monkey Trial fame.

BTW, Hanson Park was named after David Hanson, who developed the Hanson Park area.
