My aunt owned a small grocery store at 46th & Sawyer. The Colony was one of my favorite shows. My brother Roger worked there when he was in high school from 58 - 61.

My aunts store was in the middle of the block and it was in the basement of a 2 story home where she lived above the store. It was on the east side of Sawyer.

The Colony Theater was our neighborhood movie theater, when I lived on 58th, and Rockwell. Back in 1975, one rainy Saturday night, we drove through Marquette Park, and found it empty,,,usually full of guys and girls, from all the local high schools...well we took a ride to the colony and found it full. of course a few cans of beer were snuck in. Always a good place to go.

The grocery store was in the middle of the block on Spaulding St. between 45th and 46th Street. There was and still is an empty lot to the south of the building. I grew up a block away from there. When I was small I would get some of my baseball cards from the store. I think they had push-ups which sold for 7 cents. It closed sometime in the early 60's, I think around 1962. We had to go my neighbor's Rexall store on Archer for our ice cream and for candy the little butcher shop on Archer between St. Louis and Drake Streets. Mrs. Marshall had the grocery store on 47th and Sawyer that sold hundreds of sandwiches to the factory employees for lunch.

How about the Double Drive in, 71th, and Southwest highway., True story. One night after Marquette Park closed,11 P M , we parked out side the Double drive in, slipped through the back fence, with a few six packs. In a loud voice, we heard "Alright freeze, put your hands up" We froze for a few seconds, then realized ,we had snuck into a Clint Eastwood Movie. There was always somewhere safe to hang out back then.

The Starlite was another great drive-in. Plus they had go karts. I belonged to a Rock and Roll and music for all occasion band called the Royal Crests in the 60's and every Monday after practice we would go Go Karting.

Sometimes we would hide some guys in the trunk to get in the drive in. I went to the starlight often to see the horror movies in the 50's with my girlfriend. A place to make out.

Double Drive in was pretty nice and close to our favorite food back then, White Castles on 71st and Western.
