Years ago I remember seeing three colors for hydrants in Chicago. Red-OK thats pretty simple; on the north side of 51st street with Forest View just beyond they were silver. Did silver denote "on the end of the line"? And there were also yellow ones, anybody know why?

Yes Paul, I had already visited "firehydrant.org." but their info does not coincide with what Chicago used BITD. I wonder if the colors and info listed are a new standard that has been adopted; like everything else these days there may be a group that is looking out for our best interests.
I do not know if they still paint them like they used to in the city, haven't thought to look. Hopefully a fire-buff will see this and we'll get an answer for the different colors.

I think of Chicago's fire hydrants as stakes in ground claiming city land. Such as ones near O'Hare, and one at far SW side corner of Harlem and 65th st.

Some are in odd places, like along Lawrance Av going through the Forest Preserves.

An uncle told me the red hydrants were high pressure, the yellow medium and silver low pressure.

That same uncle is pretty elderly now but I could ask him next time I see him.

Fire hydrants are color coded to the size water main that they attach to

Red is 6" to 8"
Yellow is 12"
Blue is 16" or greater
White or silver represent dead ends and should be avoided

Today the color is painted only as a stripe around the flange

Thanks for the info Casey. I don't ever recall seeing a blue hydrant BITD.
