[b]Shelly; We all hung out there in the 50's after Novena at SS, Cyrils Church. And even afterwards was a great hangout to meet girls. I hung out at Cornell park, went to Cornell theater and Peoples also. Back of the Yrds was great in the 50's.[/b]

My dad used to take me to Peoples restaurant, right next to the theater. And there was a little restaurant on Ashland, kinda by the Woolworths, called Cof-E-Break, or something like that...

As a kid, my parents would take us to the Peoples restaurant or Jucus Sisters restaurant after the movies. Both places had excellent Sauerkraut soup !

Please correct me if I'm remembering this wrong, but I seem to remember Beyond the Reef on Columbus Ave, just south of 79th. I was just a kid when my parents brought me there for my grandparents anniversary, but I clearly remember the tiki motif and the pressed duck. We got the Chinese candy with the edible rice paper with the check.

Thank you!! I recalled this restaurant as well, but not the name! We used to go here for the "special occasion" dinner...it was a really neat place for a kid to go because it was so different. Wow...I was just talking to my GF about this place. I remember a local Chinee place just SW of the Columbus/Pulaski intersection that had a bit of a tiki vibe. Tasty tiki drinks, from what I can recall.

Has anyone any memories or information on a restaurant called The Villa,near 67th and Marquette in the 1950s? My grandfather and his family ran it and there are no longer any family members who remember it. I came along a little too late to know it. My Grandfather's name was Jim Poulaki. Thanks much.

I don't remember Otto's but there was a restaurant there called Little Village at around Hmlin. There was another a few blocks, maybe Central Park, which had a woman's name, but it escapes me.

Thank you for mentioning Oswald's!! We went there for a while when I was very little, after church for Sunday dinner. We'd get duck (what a splurge!) and it was fantastic!!! I didn't remember exactly where it was.
New to this forum & reading all these memories makes me want to cry. I miss my old neighborhood & it's so sad that I can't even go near it anymore, so dangerous.

Thank you for mentioning Oswald's!! We went there for a while when I was very little, after church for Sunday dinner. We'd get duck (what a splurge!) and it was fantastic!!! I didn't remember exactly where it was.
New to this forum & reading all these memories makes me want to cry. I miss my old neighborhood & it's so sad that I can't even go near it anymore, so dangerous.

I also remember this place, but I was too young to go in there on my own. Does anyone remember the Lorelai restaurant on 95th and Cicero? The Branding Iron restaurant? And the car hop drive in that was there before Paragon took over the same place? Also Banana's steakhouse?

I believe the carhop drivein Scottsdale Guy is referring to was Richard's, also known as "Richard's drive in carfeteria," at least that is how the jingle went. It was across from Little Company of Mary Hopspital.
I only have a vague memory of the Lorelai, but I remember Banana's very well. I saw on my last visit to Chicago that the Topnotch Burger place in the little strip mall at 95th and Cicero is now closed. I guess the one further east is still operating. Until 5 guys came along, Topnotch was my favorite burger.

Jak, I could of sworn that the place I am talking about was right next door to where Christ Hospital is today. It was like a 'Duke's' drive-in type of place back in the fifties maybe?

Does anyone remember a restaurant named "Gold Coast" not too far from Marquette Park? We used to go there on Fridays for the perch. Right next door was a Nazi headquarters place with a big flag in the window. As a kid, it always made me look awhile.

Scottsdale Guy, I definitely remember Loralei's at 95th and Cicero (Oak Lawn). We used to eat there frequently. I also remember when it burned down and quite a fire it was. The Branding Iron was great, another place we went regularly and is dearly missed.
You might remember the restaurants in Ford City when they first opened - Prairie House (near Wieboldt's) and the Ford City Restaurant (near the middle of the mall) and The Millionaire's Club (a seperate building in the west parking lot next to the bank).
Anyone remember Driftwood on Pulaski up around 45th on the west side of the street?

I worked for 20 years @ 43rd and Pulaski.
The Driftwood on 44th was a regular lunch spot for me. Here's another
Hickory Inn @ 63rd and Pulaski. And The Green Light also on Pulaski.

The Branding Iron has been mentioned. It was in the Oak Lawn Bowl building, and the best ribs of anyone. Their donut holes were also excellent. After they closed, several restaurants claimed to serve "Branding Iron" ribs. The only one that I know of was the restaurant at 103rd and Southwest Highway ( I think) that is now something else. The little restaurant north of 103rd on Kedzie advertises "Branding Iron" ribs, but they are only close.

The drive in on 95th St next to Christ Hospital was Buss's ( I am not sure of the spelling). Does anybody know the name of restaurant at the intersection of 79th, Southwest Highway & kedzie during the late 50's & 60's.It was on the northwest corner.

[b]On 79thb & kedzie there has been a Burger King on the NW corner, As far as Busses ,I used to go there on my way to the Starlite Drive inn in the 50's and early 60's. Correct me if I'm wrong about 79th & kedzie.[/b]
