Does anybody remember the drug store on 65th. and Morgan, My grandfather owned it ,from mid 20ies to 1940. It was a two story building,he raised his family up stairs. I recall stories from my father and uncles. The name of it was Basiles Drugs,The building is long gone, but you still can purchase drugs on that corner

@ng123, I worked there as well back in the day with Joe, Lou, and Ann. I believe the building is still standing.

Up until the late 1950's Finnegan's Drug Store was on the SE corner of 55th & S Woodlawn. I believe (please correct me if I am wrong here) that Doc Finnegan's marble soda fountain is now the one in the Museum of Science and Industry. His store was razed as part of the Urban Renewal program that took out the commerce along 55th Street, which used to have so many stores, an A&P next to St Thomas' church, an Askow's Bakery, dry cleaners, record stores, bars, jewelry stores, so many places. I wonder if young people in Hyde Park now even know that 55th and 63rd Sreets both used to bustle with commerce and that 63rd Street had a spur of the EL running over it. All gone with the wind, now. Tonight on TV news I saw the corner of 63rd and Woodlawn and it's all brand-new townhouses. Used to be one store after another, hundreds of stores and restaurants.

you have a good memory. Marcoe Pharmacy was on the southwest corner across from Dwyer Pharmacy. Marcoe was a Rexall Drugs while Dwyer was a Les On Drug store. I worked at both in the 1970,s as did my mother. Jim Dwyer owned one while a jewish lady owned the other. Cherrios resturant was next door.

There was a Rexall drug store on the corner-NW of 71st and Western. I can still recall the tast of the fountain coke. I think it is a currency exchange now. You could go north on Western and shop at Sloan's department store. It had a great skylight in it with wonderful wooden floors.
Also Mulay's Pharmacy on 79th near Kedzie. Joe,the owner always had a cigar hanging out of his mouth. His wife Mary wore the widest make-up. They had a son who was also a pharmacist who was quite dishy-at least to an 11 year ol girl!

Actually, Bruce and Ken's had three stores. They had an additional one on Oak Park Avenue between Lake and North Boulevard in the Oak Park shopping area. After closing the stores, Bruce wound up taking a job as a pharmacist at the Dominick's at Belmont and Cumberland until he retired a few years later.
