Chicago Police Parade - 1896

this is presumably know to be the first thing ever filmed in Chicago...

Can't quite identify the building in the background...my guess is the
Bridewell Prison @ 26th and California, which preceded the Cook County
correctional facility.

Can't quite identify the building in the background...my guess is the
Bridewell Prison @ 26th and California, which preceded the Cook County

My Guess is that is the old Chicago Armory Building.
I believe that maybe where many horse shows were held until the 50's as I remember going to the 'Armory" but was too young to know exactly where it was. There may have been several existing Armories in the 50's- but that is another topic.

I don't know what building that is, but William Selig shot "Tramp and the Dog" here in 1896. So but the police parade may not be the first thing filmed in Chicago.

"Chicago Police Parade" was filmed in September of 1896.. The footage was taken from the "Cinematographe" and invention of the Luminiere Bros of France who developed a hand cranked more efficient version vs the electrical invention of Thomas Edison. It was Alexandre Promio, one of their cinematophers, who traveled here from France to capture the :45 CPD parade. Selig, who purchased his patent from the Lumiere Bros, filmed "Tramp and the Dog" sometime in 1896, and while "Tramp and the Dog" is know to be the first feature film shot in Chicago, its really tough to say which one chronologically was filmed first..

If you're referring to the E Chicago Ave Armory Building, it wasn't constructed until 1907

I was waay off! But the buildings do look similar. It could be the Bridewell at another angle.
