Yep. I raced at the indoor drags in the Amphitheater. in December '62 and Jan '63. Had a '63 Pontiac :). Turnout was great. In addition to like racing on ice, the ventilation was poor. The carbon monoxide fumes were nasty. The upside was a chance to drag race :).

Addison Street between Narragansett and Oak Park was always a big drag strip. Cars would sail along there at over one hundred miles an hour. Our house was right on Addison, and over the years, no less than seven cars smashed into the house, including one that severed the gas main before the shut off. I am really glad that things have quieted down now.

I think Santa Fe Speedway was at 91st & Wolf Road. Remember their commercial? "Santa Fe Speedway...the action track is clay." The place out in the SW suburbs was 107th St between McCarthy Road and RT 83 alongside Saganasky Slough. There wasn't an inch of pavement that didn't have burn out marks on it. This section of the road ran thru the Cook County Forest Preserves. They had guys at both ends with walkie-talkies as lookouts so the cops wouldn't catch them.

Are you talking about the allison aircraft engine dragster that rolled & killed the driver at the end of the quarter?I was there & was at the site as the crash truck arrived .I do not remember why I was so far down that day,but I still can see that in my mind.

How about the drag racing along Addison Street, along the cemeteries between Narragansett and Oak Park Avenues? I live along there, and since the 1960's we have had six cars crash into our house. I remember as a little kid hearing a big boom, and seeing the headlight of a 1955 Ford shining through the wall into the basement. Later on, one car hit the wall a little further up and broke the gas line before the shut off...almost blew the house up. Since that little adventure, a guard rail has been installed along the side of the house. Personally, I have driven along there in rush hour traffic, in excess of 60 mph, and been passed by other cars.
