I remember those Bonanza commercials for Chevrolet. Chevy was their main sponsor. Once each season (September, as I recall), Bonanza would run a commercial-free episode and after the ending Chevrolet would run one long commercial introducing the upcoming year's models. My friends and I always looked forward to that episode with anticipation as in those days Chevy was as good as it gets - especially the Corvette and Impala.

Thats interesting, I didn" t know that Chevrolet used those shows to showcase there new cars. As a kid from the sixties, that Bonanza theme song ,only ment that the weekend was over. Better do that homework! I remember that on Bewitched they only drove chevys.

I remember the lit up sign Tony Piet had, and the jingle for Farrell-Hicks, and Dick the Bruiser would sometimes hangout at Ben's Auto Sales at 58th-Western.

There used to be a Ford dealership run by Dan Gaines at 4533 / 4541 S. Cottage Grove Ave. It opened in 1936 although it remained at that location for a very short time. Maybe that's the one you were having in mind?

Fond memory of my first new car - 60 Chevy Impala - that I bought at Bill Becker Chevrolet 4530 Archer Ave.

There was Midway Chevrolet, which was around 64th & Cottage...maybe that's the one?

On that Nikki Chevy tune, didn't they also have a " Come in today!" ending..
How about Jim Moran, " The Courtesy Man" I think he switched to selling Chevys
after Hudson went down the tubes..

Jim Moran switched to selling Fords, then retired to Florida and became a Toyota dealer. I believe he influenced them to introduce the Lexus. He died a few years ago, but I did see his yacht in Ft. Lauderdale harbor.

Does anyone have information on a mid-70s Evanston Volkswagen dealer?
Today's VW dealer is at 1033 Chicago Ave. which I believe is the site of the old Carol Buick.
Would love to see historic pictures if possible.

I bought a 1995 olds Cutlass from Thompson Olds, good car. I bought a brand new 1968 Dodge Charger R/T 440 at a Dodge dealership on south Western around 7000 south, can't think of the name. I wish I had that car now.

Jim Moran -- the Courtesy Man. He moved early 60's to Miami Florida and just died about 2007. His company is the South East distributor for Toyota. It's rated one of best company to work for. Look up Jim Moran,the Courtesy Man on the internet.great story about him.

Interesting side note...chinewbie mentioned Carol Buick in Evanston. Governor Henry Horner, who was Governor from Illinois from 1932-40, was really not named Horner. His grandfather, who had the same name, founded one of the first wholesale grocery companies in Chicago and is sometimes credited as the first Czech immigrant to Chicago. Gov. Henry Horner was the son of the original Henry Horner's daughter, named Della I think, and she married a man named Levy. They had two sons, the Governor, and James Levy. They didn't get along, and separated, and each parent took one of the sons. Grandma Horner insisted that Henry take his grandfather's name, Horner, even though he was born with the name Levy. His brother, James Levy, was raised by the father, with the father's last name, and became a Buick dealer down on the Michigan Avenue Automobile Row. I believe Carol Buick was owned by James Levy's son.

does anybody remember the first factory recall,sent out for a vehicle? I have worked for Chrysler, Plymouth< Dodge' I remember the 1978 dodge Volaries being recalled,because the front fenders were rusting out. Recalls seamed to be rare, maybe only one to any car line.?.? Times have changed, Man I miss my old 65 Chevy Impalas

I remember a notorious Ford Pinto recall a bit earlier in the 70's. It seems they were spontaneously catching fire. It was part of Johnny's monologue almost every night for awhile. I seem to remember a popular "What's this?" type of joke involving a Bic lighter but I don't recall exactly how it goes.
