been to the shop n bag. also remember a national tea on 63rd in between central and naragansett, an old kroger on pulaski and 58th I think it was, a jewel on 55th and keeler, and an OLD hillman's on pulaski north of 47th I believe, all long gone now...
There was Mayflower Store on Addison & Central later to become a Dominick's. Once there was A&P store on Fullerton between Laramie & Cicero Ave. Farmers Market was a popular grocer on Elston Ave. There use to be a small Jewel on Morse Ave.in Rogers Park.
In the 1950's there was Royal Blue Stores in Chicago and the suburbs. At one time Royal Blue had 50 plus locations. Cardinal Foods in the 1950's had 64 locations in Chicago alone and many in Wisconsin also.

When I moved back into the City in 1980, I lived in East Rogers Park and shopped at that Jewel. Later on we used to shop at that Dominick's when we lived near 6 Corners. There was no Jewel behind the Sears store at that time.
The Hi-Lo (not sure how they spelled it) specialized in ten-cent items---well, this was back in the day. But they had the best canned applesauce I have ever tasted---the brand was Apple Bay and it came from Wisconsin. Was faintly pink and had a really strong apple flavor. For a dime. Also cans of mashed sweet potatoes for a dime, and bags of pasta---lots of things. We could sure use that now!
The Hyde Park Co-op no longer exists. I remember it on 57th Street then in the late 'Fifties they opened a big new store that had a cookie-baking machine---the cookies came out of the oven on a conveyor belt and you could buy them still warm---for 50 cents a pound.
I worked at Hillmans Food, along with my brothers at 43 and Pulaski. That was their warehouse. They had stores at 95th and Jeffrey, Oak Lawn and in the basement of Sears at 63rd and Halsted. They went out of business in 1982. My wife worked at Eagle Foods at 87 and Harlem in Bridgeview. They went out of business in 2001.Hi Lo store was at 57th and S Pulaski and Kroger at 59 th and Pulaski.

What happened to that big new store that the Co-Op built on 47th? I remember meeting with some representative from the alderman's office about the signals at Lake Park and 47th, and she told me that their building and opening that store is what killed the Co-Op.
