To 90 or 290?? 194 and 594?

I know a lot about the Ike and JFK route #'s.

For one, 1979 was when the Ike was renumbered as I-290. And the JFK was 90/94 to Edens, and 90 to Woodfield. [and OHare spur renamed to I-190.]

Previously, the Ike extention was finished around 1960 from 294 to York Rd/Lake St and was I-90. From there to future site of Woodfield, I-90 was labeled 'under construction' until 1970.

At same time, NW Tollway from JFK to IL 53 was labeled "To 90" as the old beat up signs in feature article. Then in '70, was re-labeled as the extension of IL 194 from the Kennedy, while the spur into O'Hare was IL 594.

Check the 1970 Cook Co. Highway map in the Chicago History Museum link for proof.

Look at old maps and see many sections of the main Interstates were 'under cons' or 'proposed'. One that never got built was I-194, the Crosstown!!

personally I think that whole numbering stinks, and I can't believe a thinking official planned it. So I never use it, talking in terms of Kennedy and Jane Adams and Eisenhower or Eisenhower extension, etc. That's clear enough. What isn't clear and even massively confusing is people saying "take 290 to 90, then 294 to 94". Huh, what did he say? I'd bet money people have driven for miles in the wrong direction based on what they thought they heard, and've done so for many years.

No different in any city. The prefex 2,3,4,5 etc. just means its a bypass route to eliminate traveling through the main part of a city. If your on 290 going around Chicago, eventually you will be back to 90. 90 is an east/west route across the country and the bypasses in every state it goes through will have a prefex to allow you to skip the city traffic. Check 75 to Florida, or 80 to California. Not really confusing if you keep it in mind. Even numbers East/West, Odd numbers North/South, just like they were before any expressways were built in the 50s. Route 31, route 64. same pattern.

you've entirely missed the point, it has nothing at all to do with even/odd or east/west conventions. the ear doesn't recognize the difference between the spoken '2' vs the spoken 'to'. simple (verbal) communication is bankrupt (and many times all you have is verbal). it's so obviously wrong the old comedy team of abbott & costello could've make up a routine in their usual miscommunicated fashion on this kind of exchange

I think YOU, might be confused even with 3 and 4. 4 will confuse you with FOR and the new 390 route could mean its lined with trees. (just kidding pal)

I hope Julia in my GPS doesn't get confused and tell me to take to90. At age 82 my heart won't take it.

It common knowledge that Bypass Interstates are even #'s, 3 digit. That's how it has been for nearly 60 years.

modern GPS is the one thing that largely saves drivers from the idiotic confusion of this highway numbering system

besides hearing things wrong a person can write down I90 in passing along directions, but their I's look more like 1's, so I90 is confused with 190. when you're behind the wheel you need literal and unmistakeable instructions, not something you have to scratch your head about 'what did they really mean?'

if I woke up one morning and all the highway signs were replaced overnight with new numbers not readily confused--i.e. no more '2's or '1's in the first digit--I'd say what the hell took you guys so long to fix the problem. free new maps to everyone as a consolation

I was going to drive up I-94 to Milwaukee the other day but never made it. The road signs said "Milwaukee-Left," so I decided to wait until it comes back.
