tough to find any specific info on where the Bulko stations were in Chicago. They are long gone, sold to Gulf Oil in the early 60's. I do vaguely remember the elephant logo and that most of the stations were on the south side.

My best guess as to that specific Bulko location are probably the southeast corner of Montrose and Sacramento, the southwest corner of Montrose and Mozart or the northwest corner of Montrose and Albany, based on Historic Aerial views.

Grew up there. Montrose & sacremento was SINCLARE & the N/W corner of California/Montrose was a gas station briefly, then a mechanic. It may have been Bulko. I rememeber The gas station on the west side of Pulaski just north of Montrose. It was the one that had the TIGER in your tank. (whoever that was?) Bulko may have been on Montrose & Albany.

I spoke with someone from the neighborhood who told me that THEY remember a BULKO gas station on the S/W corner of Montrose & Mozart. I remember a gas station but don't recall the name.

There was a Bulko on the southwest corner of Ashland and Wellington. From 1959 until 1963, I lived just down the street at 2858 North Ashland (my house was on the spot that is now occupied by the Pier One).

On a slightly related topic, the Jewel/Osco on that block used to be on the west end of the next block north, in Appleton Plaza. And that Plaza used to be a city park with two ball fields, until the shopping center was built (in 1962, I think; I'm fuzzy on that date).

I looked up an old Bulko ad and it says 2900 W. Montrose, corner of N. Francisco.
Hope the divorce did not go through!

That's an interesting bit of history-mystery about the Park.

Mom & Dad gassed up at Ashland & Wellington in the '60s.
I recall the later '60s had a cartoon sign announcing a merger of Citco & Enco with the Triangle & Rectangle logos shaking hands.

Whenever we passed I'd annoyingly say, "Citco and Enco meet."

The station on Ashland at Wellington was also the corporate office. The Bulk Petroleum Corp was sold to Gulf Oil in 1963 for $14M. Lots of money back then. At the time of the sale there were about 40 stations with the majority being on the South Side.

My grandfather was Joseph L Stone, Sr. "JL" who founded the company in the early 1920s under a different name. The first service station was on either Chicago or Ontario. My dad was Joe, Jr. I'd go to the office with my dad as often as he would take me.

The unique thing about Bulko was it only sold gasoline and products. No mechanical work. And JL owned the land the stations were built on, still very rare.

Most of the gas stations on the soutside back in the 50's,60's were Standard Oil, Sinclare, Texaco and Ryan Gas. Then came City Service the old Siclare, then came Gas City. Can't remember any Bulko.

We used to have a Deep Rock gas station on the corner of Oak Park and Addison. I have seen pix of it when it was originally built, and it was a Sinclair station when it opened. Later, it became a Standard, later Amoco station, before finally closing as a gas station and becoming only a repair shop. There was also a Clark at the SE corner of Irving Park and Oak Park forever, it later became a Citgo, and then Shell.

Montrose and Francisco rings a bell, NW corner. They tore it down and put up a mini mall.
