Ford City

I looked for the old Ford City thread but it must have been one of the ones that got eaten a few months back. A friend who is cleaning out her photo album, and didn't know what this was, gave this image to me. I damned near fell out of the chair when I saw it.

If memory serves, that had been a Chicago Dodge factory during World War II. They made Wright R3350 engines for B-29s there.

Wow thats a real treat to see a photo like that The old Tucker Plant in chicago southside were ford city shopping mal is now . Man I wish Tucker would of got those cars in production on a mass scale . I never thought that anyone would of had a picture of that plant . I never seen it from the front door . I bet the tucker website has photos of the old plant but wont put them up on the internet for us to see . I dont think that many People Knew where the old plant as at , I never knew until I walked in a hobby Shop on 63th street and the man told me where they were made at . He told me at were the presently ford city shopping mall is at .

I was told it was were the ford city shopping mall is now .. I was told this by many people and a Eye witness to it . Some Person that owned a hobby Shop on 63Th street Told me it was in the ford city mall , before it was a shopping mall . I would love to see a picture of the site your talking about . There's A picture of the tucker Plant at the top of the page . But most people don't know were or that the tucker plant was at ford city . When I was a small boy My aunt sue use to talk me to ford city by bus . The driver use to make reference to the tucker Plant . I remember that she told me they made cars over there . Just a thought .

Here's a photo of Tucker #1043, when it sat in front of the Bel-Air Driving Range in Bellwood (50th & St. Charles):

Ford City was originally a Chrysler Corporation facility called Dodge Chicago during WWII.

I was told that Tootsie Roll has a display of some sort for Tucker either in their lobby or in the front office. I may stop in there, as I am on the hunt for better job anyway. Maybe I can kill two birds with one stone.

It was always my understanding that the Ford City site had beena Dodge plant during WW II and, as stated by SUPERCFL, was built to manufactury Wright R-3350 engines for B-29 bombers. It was subsequently purchased by Tucker and eventually by Ford. Although Ford did own it at one time, I do not know that they ever manufactured aanything there. That is suposedly where the name "Ford City" came from. I do remember that long before it was converted to a shopping mall, everyone referred to it as the Ford Plant.
There are tunnels that connect part of the plant with Midway Airport. I was down in the Midway end of the tunnels back in the 80's when I was a flight instructor there. They are damp, scary and full of rats. I did not feel like doing any exploring of them. I believe that the tunnels were built to transport the engines safely from the Dodge plant to the airport if necessary. As it was told to me the purpose was to have a safe way to transport them in case Hitler was able to develop a strategic bomber capable of reaching Chicago. I don't know if they were ever actually used for that purpose. Practically speaking it seems that it would have been jmuch more efficient to ship them by rail to the final assembly point.

Gotta wonder if those tunnels are still there, now that the Orange Line is in place.
