Is there anything that we can do to rid ourselves of these spam posts, especially the ones hawking counterfeit money and documents? And maybe get them off the trending topics list?

Rich and Jeff,

I agree with you. I tried looking up where to and to whom a complaint can be entered. Who monitors the forum? I'm glad you guys feel the same. Now we see job placement companies, get your diploma, get your degree, investments, everything but Chicago. There must a Webmaster or lead.
I joined this forum to talk about Chicago and keep the memories going.

Well, absent webmaster action, one thing we can do, aside from reporting, is post some new threads. Maybe we should all think of something we'd like to discuss, and post them, if only to crowd the drek out of the Trending Topic list.

Okay, I just reported about ten spam posts and it took all of three minutes. If anyone isn't familiar with how to do this, just click on the "Report" link at the bottom of the offending post (in the row tittled Options) and leave a message in the box. I wrote "Please remove these robots" then copied and pasted it on nine other reports. It'll probably pay off if everyone takes a few seconds to report every spam post as soon as it appears.

Yeah, don't reply to these clowns, it just keeps them on Trending Topics.

Another thing, never, ever click on their links, as you could be heading for a malware trap.

I hang out on a rather sophisticated political site, and they, too, have problems with spammers. They do have a community moderation system, and two Hide Rates will get the comments hidden from most, marking them for removal and blocking from the site. Dunno if Forgotten Chicago has that capability.

I am not sure how much we can do without becoming super restrictive or having big brother approve each message.

The purpose of the things is to plaster their link in as many places as possible to move that site higher in the search engine rankings.

I can't imagine there could possibly enough money in this to pay for manual entry, but apparantly they get past the antispam signup code.

Maybe there is tougher one we can try.

p,s.

Don't reply to them!
They are not reading and it could possibly help them by adding page views.

Personally, I scan each forum for actual messages, read those and mark the forum read without opening the spam messages. I don't know if it hurts their process, but it can't possible help them.

I've used the contact button on the bottom of the page to complain of spam.
Maybe they need some volunteers to clean up the boards.

If I knew who to contact, I'd volunteer!

it's just been said

"yeah, don't reply to these clowns'

"don't click on their links"

"don't reply to them"

that's all cautions well and good--I certainly would agree--and even deserve to be reminded but unfortunately reality trips you up. I'm looking at so many websites and clicking on so many things, day after day, that the accidental click and opening of one of these 'spams' is statistically inevitable. I do it from time to time and my only defense is 'oops'.
