A great piece!

One of Roberts' motels was across the street from the Show Lounge and was just demolished a year or two ago. It's where Corey Brooks, the pastor of the church now occupying the lounge site, camped on the roof.

The 500 was in a really strange location that couldn't have offered much in the way of restful sleep. It was at 63rd & Calumet...the eastern edge of the property backed up to a CTA rail spur that led to the Lower 63rd St. Yard, and the western edge looked over a freight rail yard.

Directly across the street was a CHA high-rise, and just west of that was the Skyway off-ramp onto Indiana Ave.

Yes I remember the Corey Brooks incident, awesome stuff. I love how he mentions that he refused to book Blues musicians underscoring the rivalry that existed between blues and jazz clubs at the time. He also mentions how 43rd St was the only strip on the Southside that was known as a blues alley. The city incorrectly named 47th St as the blues district when historically 47th st was nothing but jazz clubs.

Yeah, that whole 'Blues District' thing came up when the attempted remaking of 47th & MLK was underway in the '90s. What a joke!

Do you have any info on the old long closed movie theater that is at Oakwood Blvd and King Dr, its sits next to the old Oakwood Line.

Yes, it had a number of names but is listed on Cinema Treasures as the Park Theater. Good photos, too:
