Gladys's

This is my first post on forgotten Chicago and it is for my Dad.

He worked in the old Santa Fe yards in late 1964. He worked primarily with African-Americans and was a young kid (20yo) from Iowa. He enjoyed his work and always loves to tell stories regarding his short time there. Anyway, one night a friend of his, an old boxer named KC (or Casey) got hurt on the job in the early AM. The shift super told my Dad to get him to some doctor on Archer to fix him up and to then take KC to get Reuben sandwiches at Gladys's. My dad was the only white guy in this bar on the south side, circa 1964, at ~3AM. You had to walk downstairs to enter and there was a bar and kitchen. He wasn't concerned, because KC said "he's with me," and was treated well. He remembers everybody in the place being dressed to the nines.

Now, I know of the Gladys luncheonette on S. Indiana. That location was up the block (or two) from the original location. Can someone help me find out if there was a bar named Gladys's or similar on the south side, in a primarily African-American Neighborhood? Was this the precursor to the luncheonette? My Dad is not getting any younger and he wants to find out where that was, but he just cannot remember. We have done some research by checking the city directories of the time.

Thanks in advance.

Glady's had three locations...the 3700 block of S State, and 2 locations in the 4700 block of S Indiana...If your dad was there in 64', he was there just after they moved from the second location.

The original owner died about 5 years ago, and shortly after the restaurant closed

Thanks for the reply. I had seen that information from one of my many previous searches. This was 1964 and after hours.....so I am a bit confused. I found an image of the second location from the Cook County website and it shows a basement entrance into what looks like apartments now. Is there a chance that there was the luncheonette at the new location and an after-hours place still operating at the previous?

He is just determined that he went into a downstairs location named Gladys's, Gladys', Glady's.....but we will have to physically make a visit to the neighborhood to see if it jogs his memory.

Here is 4541 South Indiana, the second location:

And, of course, here is the one everyone knows:
Valued at $124,000+

Ok, now I must have used the correct search terms because I found this link:

http://northbysouth.kenyon.edu/1999/food/neh/gladys.htm

Now, he is 100% positive he went into a basement restaurant/bar/tavern named Glady's. This has to be it, but he was working in Chicago a year after the move. Still work to be done here. Thanks

Bump this to the top in case anyone hasn't seen it.
