Before it was Happy Foods, it was a Dominicks. I'm counting from 1967.

Which one? The one on Central, north of Devon, in Edgebrook? Or the one on Northwest Highway, up in Edison Park?

The one on Central north of Devon. And not only was it a Dominick's - it was one of the early ones in the expansion. Store number four or five.

Interesting. It seems like in the past few years, and Dominick's store that was closed was torn down, until Safeway exited the Chicago area last year. Their newest store in the area, at Pulaski and Lawrence, was shuttered a few years back, then torn doe and replaced with a strip mall of smaller stores. The same thing happened to the store at Central and Addison, only the recession killed anything beyond the CVS that is there now. We used to shop at both stores.

Funny thing is, they (Safeway owned Dominick's) reopened a few closed locations, such as the Ridge store (between Devon and Pratt) rather than sell off or tear down. I can't remember if that one got bought by like Jewel.
I hadn't realized that the Happy Foods was, or had been, originally, a Dominick's.

The Dominick's at Central and Addison was a Kohl's grocery, the same company that now owns Kohl's Dept stores. They had groceries and sold them to Dominick's.
But even before Kohl's, this same store was a Mayflower grocer.

While we are on the subject of Happy Foods, I'm pretty sure that what recently was recently called Nate's, on Northwest Highway was once a Happy Foods. It reopened twice recently, and unfortunately closed twice in rapid succession. And my cousin disputes my recalling it as a Happy Foods, so now I'm not sure. The store was southeast of Devon, and well southeast of the Edison Park store, which is still open (and was that always a Happy Foods, or something else?)

Jeff, between Harlem and Devon on Northwest Highway on the south side of the street was a restaurant I can remember. There was other stores but I can't remember them now. Wasn't there a furniture store on the corner of Northwest Highway and Harlem? That would be the southwest corner.
The more I think about it, there was a little grocery store on Northwest Highway just south of Devon on the south side of the street. It was just north of the business on the corner of Northwest Highway and Harlem. The grocery store shared a driveway with a restaurant next door to it to the north. The restaurant I think was a converted house to a business. I can't remember the name of each place though, the restaurant or the grocery store.
The Happy Foods on Northwest Highway is now closed.

There was a Happy Foods on the southeast corner of Clark Street and Granville into the 1960's. It was across the street from Winsberg's dept store. It became a Certfied around around 1970 and stayed in business until about 2000 when it closed it's doors and sold the building to the Raven theater (which still resides there).
