Also, to further clarify b.a. hoarders comments, the square mile on which the airport sits was originally designated as "Section 16" land. "Section 16" land was originally designated by the Northwest Ordinance of 1785 as land that was to be set aside in each Township for educational purposes. The land remained in tact despite several attempts to develop it. When the land cam

Christopher Lynch explains it nicely in his book. I actually have a picture of the clubhouse (see below), but I've been told that the picture I have is of the original clubhouse, which burnt down. The one which became the home is actually a newer one. Also I have a picture of people actually lifting the tracks up from the middle of the airport, with Mayor Kelly on hand (see below)

Thanks Frank. I had found this postcard online. I'm not sure of the exact date of the "Hawk's Drug Store" photo, but I have other photos of the building and the Drug Store sign is not there. The photos I have are copies of copies so they are not too clear but I am hopeful, I recently met a 100 year old resident of Clearing who is going to share several binders of old photo's, etc.

Hello All, Yes the response was awesome, we had about 50 people packed into a small meeting room. The program in April will actually be the Forgotten Chicago guys talking about the "Clearing Industrial District". They will post the details here when we finalized the program. I do plan on doing my Garfield Ridge/Clearing talk again at the Clearing Library also. I haven't settled

I think this nails it. Check out the photo of a Jewel store in Chicago from 1966 from this blog. In the window you can clearly see "Let's Go To The Races": http://pleasantfamilyshopping.blogspot.com/2008/05/gotta-stop-at-jewels.html

There's some talk of it here: "I'm not sure who ran this in Chicago in the late 60's or early 70's but it ran on VHF, so it was probably WGN. We got the cards at the Jewel supermarket, and the shows ran on saturday night. I know it was VHF because we didn't get a UHF TV ( Zenith Chromacolor II transistor/tube hybrid ) until Christmas of 1973." http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/

I just finished watching a few documentaries about arcade Video Games and the rise and fall of video arcades throughout the late 1970's to the middle 1980's. It got me thinking about some of the arcades around Chicago. Do you have any fond memories of any video arcades? Here on the SW side of Chicago we had our share of "Fun-Zones" particularily one located at Archer and Harlem and

BTW, the old Goldblatt's store on Chicago and Ashland has been converted into the new West Town Branch of the Chicago Public Library. Memebers of the Goldblatt's family were there for the grand opening in September. http://www.chipublib.org/branch/details/library/west-town/ http://www.chipublib.org/aboutcpl/cplpr/2010/westtownopening.php

Not sure how up to date these are. The Marzano's Miami Bowl sign at Archer and Karlov was knocked down like 6-7 years ago.

The "Petersen Classic" bowling tournament was held ay Archer/35th Recreation bowiling alley until about 15 years ago when the bowling center was torn down to build townhomes. The tournament itself moved to AMF Hoffman Lanes along with the original lanes and sitees: http://www.thepetersen.com/ The tournament was (and still is) unique because the lanes are a bit of a throwback. CPL maintained a bookmobile service until late 2009. They primarily served retirement homes and were available for community events. Due to budget cutbacks the bookmobiles have been (hopefully) temporarily "retired". It has been a while since they visited schools. I've worked for the library for 20 years and don't ever remember them visiting schools on a regular basis other than

Well, I can confirm that it was still being called the Queen Recreation Alleys as late as 1962.

I found a reference from a 1937 tribune article for a "Queen Recreation Alleys" located at 6236 S. Ashland. Of course it could have been renamed over the years. I'll see what else I can dig up.

My only suggestions are maybe the county archives the old records for defunct hospitals or I know many of the old sanitarium buildings became Peterson Park of the Chicago Park District: http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/parks.detail/object_id/433b5e34-bd4e-4fe5-a74e-81dedbacc96d.cfm Maybe they can trace what happened to the records.

I have all sorts of photsos of the Clearing Industrial District and I'm pretty sure the J&J building . There is a woman who owns a jewelry store on 63rd street just west of the airport who has books and books full of old CID brochures, pictures and documents. I'll see if I can figure out how to post pics on this forum, if not drop me a PM and I can email some pics to anyone interested and gi

You can get access to the Archive through the Chicago Public Library Website www.chipublib.org from home or any other internet connection. You do need an active and clear Chicago Public Library Card. If you cannot access this let me know I can look for specific info fo
