Kchi: Sorry to be 3 years late, but I just discovered this site recently. I have a long way to go to finish reading all these interesting forums! I'll add a theater to your list here. It was called the Metro, and it was at 3308 west Lawrence, across the street from the B&K Terminal. Its last showing was on March 15th? 1952 (I don't remember it because I was only 2 1/2 years old), but the

In the 1960s, as a teen, I'd walk along the fence along the east side of the property (Central Park ave). I never wanted to try to get inside because I'd heard all the "horror stories" about the place. But one distinct memory I have of the place is that "road" that followed the fence; the area was filled with pheasants! I'd never seen them in the Chicago area until then, and ne

Apparently, the good people of Chicagah didn't want to let go of Irving Avenue (now Bell street). At the corner of Bell and Pershing, THREE green street signs grace the street light pole: Pershing, Bell, and IRVING. Mikey

I worked in that area for 4 years and used to walk past it on my lunch break. I was told (I never verified this) that the home was 100% electric, and that it was built as a "home of the future" that, from the description I was given, sounded like The Jetsons' house, where appliances were "hidden" to keep them out of the way, and at the touch of a button they'd "pop out&quo

Last Henry's I remember was 2 blocks north of the city limits, in Lincolnwood at about 6600 N. Lincoln. But the best burger joint I can remember was Cooper & Cooper's at 4750 N. Kimball, across the street from the Kimball EL terminal. Any Albany Parkers out there? ;-) Frank, the owner, would stick his hand down into a container of fresh ground beef, pull out a handful, slap it down onto

A while back, I posted to the Q&A forum regarding a film that was shot in Chicago around 1970, and am still searching for info. However, I did get some welcome input about some possibilites, like "Goldstein" and a few others. Now, my question is: Where do I find these movies, for purchase or rental? These films weren't the kind of blockbusters that would available at a video renta

I'm probably preaching to the choir here, but you haven't seen anything until you view the work of Vivian Maier. Her work, to me, is one of the most important finds ever. WTTW (Jay Shepsky, "Jay's Chicago") has run a Maier documentry a few times, and it always gives me goosebumps. Mikey

Wow, what memories! Beginning around 1959 or 60, my dad and I would go down there almost every Sunday morning, rain or shine, hot or cold. The smell of Jimmy's (?) Polish Sausage at the NW corner of Maxwell and Halsted carried for a half mile. Yum! All the junk that foilks woild pour out of their trunks and onto the street... what treasure! The guy with an armful of watches, etc. One high poin

I wish I'd known it was going to be on. I don't listen to commercial radio very much, but mainly jazz, on COD's staion. Bob is very much in tune with Chicago, moreso than any radio / TV personality I've ever known. For the fans of Bob's stint on WLS, I uploaded an aircheck of his first show on WLS, May 8th, 1973, to the Chicagoland Radio & Media website. Mikey

I agree with you, Mr. D. I've noticed this occurrence on a number of maps, but I didn't think this was the case with Bryn Mawr. The thing about those blocks of streets down around 134th and Stony have intrigued me since I first learned the Chicago street system, about 50-odd years ago. I would travel down through that area with my dad and wonder where the streets were. I guess the map companies ju

Thanx, nordsider and W.O.W. for your help! I saw the screen shots of Fearless Frank, and it DID start the wheels turning. I'll give it a looksee. I don't remember that one being on any lists of Chicago films that I've seen. I'll have to call Factes and see if they've got a copy. Way Out Wardell... I have a jazz LP of that title by a tenor man named Wardell Gray. Interesting. Mikey

Thanx for the suggestion, J.D. "Medium Cool" is one of my favorite films, and I've watched it a few times. Sadly, it's not the one I'm looking for. I'm new to this forum, and I'm hoping that someone who reads my original post will have an answer. I'm sure it will happen soon. I will agree with you about Medium Cool, though... fantastic movie, and one that I feel that everyone sh

Hi, and thanx for the quick reply. I began researching this subject about 20-odd years ago, and have made a couple of calls to the Chicago Film Office. They weren't much help, unfortunately. I've watched a number of films that were possibilites: no luck. I've now whittled down the list of candidates to a handful, the two most possible being "Mickey One", which was black & white

From the few threads I've follwed here, I can see that most of you are fantastic detectives. I've got a mystery that I've been working on over a period of about 30 years, and I could use a LOT of help. Around 1972, I caught a scene from a movie being shown on channel 9 (I think) when they used to show movies on Sunday afternoons. Unfortunately, I couldn't hang around to see the title of the

I realize that I'm a bit late in this response, but I just learned of this forum yesterday. Anyhoo, I was intrigued by this question, so I searched my extensive collection of Chicago maps and street guides, and came up with some info about Bryn Mawr ave. According to my 1946 "Rand McNally (RM) Chicago Pocket Map", BM was continuous from Elston ave. to Mannheim/LaGrange rd. A 1946 C

Years back, I read a few mystery books (fictional) by Fredric Brown, who wrote many mysteries that are set in Chicago. The neat thing about his style is that as he leads you along chases in Chicago neighborhoods, mostly in the downtown area, he describes every street and alley as he stalks his prey. As you follow him, in your mind you can "see" where he is - buildings, streets, artifices
