I was looking at this, and remembered that there were a bunch of television antennas on that tall part of the building in the 60's. The gas station on California was, at the time, a Martin Oil one, and my grandfather would stop there on occasion.

The traffic signals along Cermak in this stretch are interconnected to the railroad's track circuits, and one location has to gates or flashing lights, but the signals go into preemption just the same. I think it's Throop, but I can't say for sure.

The City maintained some of it's own electrical system in the early days of electric street lighting. There are still a number of them around on the South Side.

My cousin-in-law's mother lived on Goose Island. They had a frame cottage that was near the old Ogden Avenue viaduct.

There were actually three railroads paralleling each other on the Shore Line: the CNS&M, the C&NW, and the Milwaukee Road. The CMSP&P eventually cut back and abandoned service, turning their R-O-W to the L, and the suburban service to the CNS&M.

Reminded me of an old brochure for Brookfield Zoo that my grandmother had. You took the Garfield Park L to the end of the line and then transferred to the West Towns streetcar. The simplified graphics seemed to imply that there was a physical connection. Interestingly enough, the CTA contemplated buying the Chicago and West Towns after it was formed, but decided against it.

I wonder if Bubbly Dynamics has tried to get space in the tower. They've taken over some of the buildings. http://www.bubblydynamics.com/

Not Hyde Park, but Marquette Manor, right across from the park, was Howie's. He had so little business he closed it down when I was about 7 or 8. It was a block or two east of Kedzie on the north side of Marquette Road. The was another on 63rd, south side of the street, about a block and a half east of Kedzie. Polansky's, I think.

I remember when they tore down Continental. Lot of equipment standing out in the open on what was left of the second floor. It's all a storage yard for some contractor now.

I went to IIT in the mid- to late 70's, and we were always told NOT to go into the projects.
