Jefferson used to also provide dry ice (I assume Home may still). We purchased a block of that to rpop up an ailing refrigerator until the new one was delivered. Knocked off a small piece to go in the freezer, and the rest went in the main compartment.

Interesting. I remember quite a bit of traffic on it back in the 1960's. What I heard around CDOT when it was closed was that there was no money to repair or replace it, and most of the tracks were gone. That latter claim seems like a lot of hooey, looking at Google Satellite recently, but I guess cutting back CTA bus service, and the twilight of the CMD, probably helped its demolition along. It s

Thanks, b.a.! I wonder what the future holds for what's left of CMD's buildings? They all appear to be abandoned. I also wonder who was the idiot who decided to tear down the Damen Avenue Viaduct over CMD's yards. That would have handled the local traffic driven off Ashland is that bus "rapid-transit" operation is built. Should have figured about the water tank...

There's a shot in the Flickr feed of the elevator shaft inside the Central Manufacturing District's clock tower that inspired my next question. Does anyone know if the tower had some other function, aside from being a clock tower and ostensibly an advertisement for the CMD? It's not connected to the other buildings above street level, so being an additional elevator doesn't seem to be its function

If I had to guess why the restaurant failed, I'd have to say it may have been a lack of off-street parking. Too bad.

I have a vague recollection about the doors being locked back around 1969, when we moved out of the neighborhood. Sometime in the 90's I happened to be back there on my way to do some field work, and that was when I noticed it had been turned into a restaurant. I was back again sometime between 2005 and 2010, and noticed the restaurant had closed. Since I was on the clock in both cases, I didn't s

I just remembered an interesting feature that existed in an old courtyard building I lived in briefly in East Rogers Park. The base had a bunch of old gas rings which I suspect were for laundry boilers. They looked like they may have still been connected, too.

Then there was Downtown Hobby, which was located in the Subway Arcade in the Loop. The owners moved up to Edison Park on Northwest Highway. And of course there was All-Nations Hobby Shop on the west side of the Loop, now long gone.

Does anyone remember the "new" hydrogen filling station that was built on the southwest corner of Damen and Fullerton? I seem to recall that it went up without much fanfare in the early 2000's, then was gone by 2005. I never saw any cars or trucks there, and wondered if anyone else knew anything about it.

Last Arf & Barf I remember was in Waukegan, just east of Green Bay Rd.on Belvidere, when we moved there in 1969. It closed, and then they built a Dunkin' Donuts in front of it on the lot, then tore it down.
