The tunnel is pretty moist - the bottom is mostly sand, though you can still see the pavers from in between the tracks (I took one as a souvenir). The devices which used to suspend the electrified wire overhead are still in the ceiling. Along at least one side of the tunnel they installed a concrete berm with a number of pipes inside it, meant to run utilities and other things through, but I don't

I have noticed those before. I've also been in the streetcar tunnel underneath all that too - that's not the L, of course, but just as fascinating!

I took a look through Google Maps/Street View this morning to see if I could find any remainder of the old L connection between the Met mainline and the Loop, between Halsted and Wells. I already knew about the remaining substation on Franklin, but I did find something new. On the east side of Jefferson between Jackson and Van Buren, the facade of a demolished building remains at the street, stick

I've actually been wanting to climb and explore these embankments for quite some time - if I ever get the guts to do it I'll report on what it's like!

It was an entrance to the CN&W's Mayfair station, which was located on the viaduct at that point. http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/CHICAGOTRANSIT/conversations/topics/19235 make sure to expand all the messages!

Hey Spike, A little searching turned up this document online. Chicago Street Names If you scroll to the D's, there are a few entries regarding Dole - a Dole Avenue on the North Side, since renamed to Drummond Place, just north of the intersection of Clark and Wrightwood; and a Dole Street in Bridgeport. It seems that what is now 28th Place in Bridgeport was formerly Napoleon Place, and b

I decided to do a little investigation yesterday after reading this post. I went to Northerly Island and found the hut, and it seemed like I could vaguely smell smoke coming from inside. I explored around Northerly Island for a little while and then ran into some other guys exploring the shore, whom I asked about the hut. They had never noticed it before, but we walked over and saw that now lots o

I've been pondering doing that for a while, but I haven't yet. I have read though that they sealed the station entrances up on the embankment as well as on the street level. Come this spring I will probably look around for some way to climb up there and check it out!

Yes, this is all very interesting information. Thanks to everyone who has shared! I can't wait to research this more. I wonder if there are any books about it that have been published? and, I would guess that the system was just buried under the streets, davey7. The freight tunnels didn't really have room for more tunnel inside them, and the photo link posted above by WayOutWardell says that the l

I was crossing the street in front of the parking garage by Union Station today when I noticed a weird manhole I've never seen before... it said "C P P T Co." across it, and I can't think of any other place I've seen a manhole like that in the city. Does anyone have any idea what it's from or what the initials mean? My curiosity is killing me!
