In my neighborhood on the southwest side, they came down the alleys. I also remember a produce vendor, driving slowly along, calling out "Straaaaw-Berrieeees".

As a kid, I went to the Highland at 79th and Ashland. Also, occasionally, the Capitol at 79th and Halsted (where the ceiling was designed to look like the night sky) and the Beverly at 95th and Ashland. I remember that there were several theater chains - on of them was Balaban & Katz.

wayuupnorth- I was also amoung those screaming kids at the "101 Cartoons" matinees. What great Satrudays! Upon reflection, I do think that the Lampost was on Ashland, just south of 79th, east side of the street. Riley's was between Ada and May, south side of 79th. I also grew in St. Sabina's parish (graduted 1963), and I remember a lot of businesses. Heading east from Ashland: -The Highland Theater (on Ashland, just north of 79th) -Walgreen's on the corner of 79th & Ashland -The Lampost Restaurant (owned by the Lambos family who lived on my block) -A Chinese takeout palce, I think called "George's" -Havle's Toy store -A Five &

I also remember going to meet arriving relatives at Englewood Union Station, which was near there. My grandmother and aunt often arrived on the Peoria Rocket.

The pool was right next to the pumping station. The sign on the building said: Griffith Municipal Natatorium, but we all called it "the pump".

I was in the Boy Scouts in the early 60's, and I remember spending a cold winter night in a cabin at Dearborn. Our troop didn't usually camp in the winter, so this was notable. I can't remember much detail, except that there was snow on the ground.
