Bob Knack.... you'll find your visit to Niles expensive. Lately, I prefer Franks 6506 W Belmont Ave. While I love deep dish .. this is my spot for Thin Crust. The EL you are probably thinking of was the CTA line that ran in the alley along the North side of 22nd street. The El operated as far west as Oak Park Ave until 1951. There was NEVER an El line that went to Brookfield Zoo. The Blue and White Streetcars were the West Town Company cars, and they operated until 1948. The cars traveled west on 22nd to Harlem south to 26.. west on

In the early 1900's... passenger trains actually operated between Downtown and (Dunning) the State Hospital 3 or 4 times a day.

I remember eating many times at Wimpy's at Clark and Madison. Hot Dogs at Woolworths.... The Dill Pickle ... on Van Buren just west of State stree,,, Hungry Tonys ... On Wells just north of Van Buren Submarine Village.. several locations in the loop

There was a Logalbo's about 6111 W Belmont... the building is still there. My folks never really cared for it.. so we always went to MARYS about 3735 or so on Fullerton -- just down the block (west) of Garden Walk Banquets. Does anyone recall a pizza Place on Belmont and Austin.. it was next to the former Rite Way Grill. I remember going there in the late 50's early 60's. The address

In the 1930sw there was a small snack shop Diner located on the triangle. This was also the end of the line Layover location for the Central Trolleybus at that time. There is a photo at... several comments ... Shanghai Lil's was almost across the street from Taste Haste Hot Dog Stand... Shanghai Lil's also became the BELLI Club for a couple years before closing for good. My aunt was a Waitress there. While it was not used during the BELLI years, I was told there was a large fish tank that featured LIVE girls as mermaids behind the bar when it was Shanghai Lil's. The Dog and Suds location was at 6100 W Belmont. circa 1973 The building itself is a converted Shell Gas station. Until they re-paved the parking lot last year, you could see the outlines of the old " bays " in the picnic area. The same building housed several Fast Food establishments including... Yogi Bear Honey Fried Chicken (another location was on Howard near Sheridan Rd)

The Jazz Showcase was in both the basement and eventually upstairs in the Happy Medium. I saw Kenny Burrell, The Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra and even The Maynard Ferguson Orchestra there in the 70's. Next door the Pancake House....I think it was called Mannys... Grand and Harlem… Kresge and Woolworth were side by side… I have yet to find another place that served Cherry Ice Cream Sodas as good I ever had there. --------------- Six Corners neighborhood the Woolworths on Milwaukee Ave You could enter from Milwaukee or Cicero. It sat abandoned for many years…. It was demolished to make way for parking facilities for the Klee Building.

About the actual Bridge over Montrose --- from... Chicago L .org The through girder bridge with ballasted deck that carried the freight lead over Montrose Avenue was removed on September 26, 1998. The Chicago Department of Transportation removed it as part of an improvement project on Montrose. The bridge itself was preserved, and brought to the Illinois Railway Museum two days later as three

Oh yes as for the old freight line about 6500 west ... This line provided supplies to the State Hospital. It dead-ended within the Hospital property with several switching tracks. I do have a schedule from 1900 that also shows 3 or 4 PASSENGER trains daily - to Dunning State Hospital. The tracks North of Roscoe were removed in the 60's. You can still see where they crossed at Addison

The Building was INDEED was a CTA sub station for the trolleybus lines. Narragansett trolleybus started service in the 1930's and operated between North Ave and Irving Park RD. Although Narragansett stopped running trolleybuses in 1953, the poles carrying the heavy black feeder lines remained to power Diversey, Belmont and Irving Park Lines.
