I always assumed that "jungle" was a play on words (or maybe a mis-hearing) of "Jonquil," the name of the street that runs through the middle of the area. Calling that part of RP "the jungle" might seem like an offensive reference to the crime rate. But it makes more sense as a play on words if the nickname existed (as you say it did) before it became gang territor
