St George in Bridgeport was a Lithuanian parish. Sadly it's now long gone, but it was very beautiful.

Let me see if I can copy it from the book at my local library and then I could try and post it. St George's parishoners according to the author were almost entirely Austrians from Burgenland, though many of the priests and nuns were not. St Augustine also had quite a few Burgenlanders along with Bavarians.

I remember the Byrne building well. There was a coffee shop-ice cream parlor on the first floor, for some reason I thought it was called Pappas'. Chris Howe had a big garage in the alley there where he kept his gray and red garbage trucks.

I maintain that we just have a general Midwestern accent, despite the deliberately exaggerated type of speech one hears on occasion from a few people. I think a fair amount of people would like to think that there's a unique Chicago accent, but I don't believe it exists.

I lived across the street from Engine Co 84 at 5711 S Halsted. Used to run to the window everytime they had a call. Then I went to school across the street from the firehouse that was at the NE corner of 53rd-Wood.

St John of God also had Urbanek on the south side of 51st. St Michael's also had Kubina-Tybor on 47th, and on 51st-Western was Stransky. The Lutherans used Fruendt just SW of St Martini's on 51st. Englewood had a couple more like Ketchum, which I believe was on the Blvd, just east of Halsted in an apt bldg.

This link has some interior photos of St Charles Borromeo, you've got to page through the book aways though. St Charles Borromeo was the childhood parish of gangster Roger Touhy, and when he escaped from prison in 1942, he held a couple of clandestine meetings there. It's described in The Stolen Years.

Regarding some of the churches mentioned. St John's 18th-Clark. James T Farrell was baptized there. Looked like a beautiful church from the outside, never saw photos of the interior. St Laurence. 72nd-Dorchester. Got inside it on Good Friday in the late 90's. Nice interior. St Columbkille. Shot of the interior was a beautiful church. St Jarlath. Would like to see an interior photo.

Regarding a couple of Pizza places mentioned. 1.Didn't Phil's on Ridgeland come 53rd-Ashland where they were called Esch's ? 2. Didn't Barnaby's on 79th-Pulaski have live bands at one time ? I believe that's where the band Chicago, found there bass player Peter Cetera.

I seem to remember Von Solbrig acquiring a very bad reputation in a short time and I believe that's why they closed. The DeMoon's owned Central Community Hospital at 57th-Wood. Does anyone remember the name of the hospital that was in China Town. It reminded me of Von Solbrig, and it was there till the late 80's at least.

Yukon Moose Cholak owned the Calumet Beach Inn at 9910 S Ewing (torndown) and occasionally tended bar. Dick the Bruiser really did on occasion hangout at Ben's Auto sales at 59th-Western.
