that old Moo Juice product just mentioned reminds me of another in a jar called PDQ, an egg-nog (flavored) mix (these products seem to've stemmed from the then new marketing of freeze-dried mixes, like instant coffee). I liked it then, just as I also liked Anna Banana soda. When invited to parties, at least the ones I was invited to it was customary to bring some drink(s) to share, and my usual

yes it is certainly ironic. I don't know that I'd begrudge it much, though. This current extension discussion's a by-product you might say of IDOT widening the Ike from 3 lanes to 4 each direction west of Austin all the way to Mannheim. IDOT must also allow enough potential track right-of-way west of the Forest Park terminal so the blue-line maybe extended in the future too (at least that far).

you know I can just about believe that event just posted actually happened and in the way it's described the bargain basements in Goldblatt's, Weiboldt's, and Marshall Fields all were positively fantastic shopping places for me (and everyone) in the late-'60s to early-'70s. But I cannot recall one in downtown Carson Pirie Scott's (or The Fair for that matter).

I view the old Humboldt Park line (which I remember only from seeing partial trackage east of Western Ave up to about 1963) and the Paulina St tracks as totally separate matters, at least as far as making my point in this discussion. Extending the old Humboldt Park line is an ancient issue completely pre-dating the CTA; once the CTA got ahold of it in 1947 they wanted nothing more to do with it t

boy do I remember those 'L' tracks first mentioned, from a kid in the '50s-'60s shopping at that Chicago Ave Goldblatts's store w/ my mom and sisters but the thing you must grasp is those particular tracks could drive a young boy (like me anyway) crazy, in that we saw them and drove under them year after year after year AND NOT ONCE DID WE SEE A TRAIN ON THEM. I recall there used to be station

the 'satellite' post-offices, as I'd termed them, however were a different thing than the Rosemont P.O. just mentioned. These 'satellites' were primarily a different store--not a post office. For example one was Queens Pharmacy @ 6213 W. Belmont, obviously an old school drug store first and foremost, but also kept postal counter hours. Another I recall many years ago was Beverly Records & T

I really liked the 'satellite' post offices that used to be appended to other types of stores, i.e. a drugstore could also have bona-fide postal services, like weighing packages for dispatch, getting forms, making postal money orders, etc (besides just buying stamps). But the USPS seems to've phased this practice out back about a dozen years. A bad move as far as I'm concerned. I say 'seems' th

just east of western on 95th there's a great old restaurant still very popular for hamburgers that I eat at every now and then, of course after that you turn onto western and have the perfect Rainbo Cone desert (doesn't get much better than that does it?)

on a whim just the other day I decided to take a drive past the original Giordano's pizzeria s-side addresses (what they were before franchizing in the early '80s), both on or near 63rd street. as far as I can tell the buildings aren't there anymore = no results. the closest contemporary Giordano's to their origins would then be the one @ 63rd & Cicero, not that that matters, probably they'r

Shock Theatre was on Channel 7, right? I remember that and Channel 5's counter-part Midnight Movie Thrillerama. This's all around 1960 and I watched them to the extent a little kid might sneakily stay up late (I remember my parents regularly let me watch the 1st half hr of Jack Paar's Tonight show, but not beyond that). Those old horror movies were all black & white and really scary to me t

Lane Tech, at least back then, accepted students north of an arbitrary Chicago street, like Madison or Roosevelt (I'm not exactly sure which) if your grades (in 8th gr. for example) were high enough--it wasn't an issue of fees or finances (except maybe the attending student had more CTA busfare to pay). The old Tuley H.S. building still stands @ Potomac & Claremont now as Jose de Diego elemen

I vaguely remember going into ABT when they were there on Milwaukee--lot's of washing machines. Hardly any shoppers there at the time, not much reason to shop there when there was Polk Bros. Quite unlike now and what you'll encounter out in ABT's vast Glenview barn. I remember their 2 intermediate locations--on Dempster west of Waukegan in the '70s to mid-'80s (still fairly small), then on Wauk

I drove by this sign 'error' yesterday and my take on it is a bit different. Yes there's too much space between the 5 and the'00s but one can still faintly make out the errant '1' in that gap. There's no painted piece of steel over the error.

I never heard of having to take ones old (spent) light bulbs back (i.e. to a currency exchange). If you paid your electric bill at a currency exchange so authorized by commonwealth Edison you were allowed a couple free regular wattage bulbs each month, all you had to do was ask for them on payment. But bigger wattage bulbs, if stocked, would required a small extra charge to get from an exchange.

in past years I probably caught a glimpse of the 'radiofest' at the dupage county fairgrounds on a sunday coincident with scott smiths' all-animal expo that's also held there twice each month and I go to now and then. too bad for me I missed this June's according to my sons reminder, but next year I'll put everything right God willing

yeah I remember that old resale store there on the west side of harlem, run by a somewhat strange guy and it's true it you got into a discussion with him about something of interest he had he responded as if he didn't really want to sell it. this'd be 20-25 years ago, and while I'm glad to know it wasn't just me I do wish i'd've found an acceptable way to really reach him then

the 2501 w. Addison building (BTW is it Addison st or ave, inquiring alumni want to know?) opened in 1935 (student lore has always had it built on the site of a garbage dump) and pre-1935 Lane was @ division & sedgewick or what later became Cooley High which was smaller. to hold 7,000 students there'd have to be more daily class schedule shifts I think. standard when I attended was 1-9 per

actually the lyric AH&J sing in the LSD song is "from rags on up to riches" (not rats). they also sing "water on the drivers' side" indicating they're heading south on LSD (in effect to Ratso's, not away from). from rags to riches is a popular old phrase

when I went to LTHS in the '60s the school enrollment was said to be 5400-5500 students total. classrooms were full and no more. I think my graduating class was 1028 one byproduct was that--unlike other high school classes--chances were you didn't know even half of your classmates for that year. the Classmates.com website regularly informs me when somebody new joins from my graduating class

I went to the tropical fish auctions myself @ Belmont & Milwaukee in the '60s (what you call Slowik Hall) currently I still attend them, run by 3 local organizations, GCCA (Greater Chicagoland Cichlid Association), GWAS (GreenWater Aquarists Society), and MAS (Milwaukee Aquarium Society). I hope I got all those names just right All those 3 clubs BTW in addition to fish auctions also hav

we called it 'pinners' (Humboldt park neighborhood) in the '60s, but key to throwing the ball against a wall is there also had to be a 'ledge', or ridge of some kind on that wall to aim the ball at. it had the effect of making results uniform. maybe that's where the alternate 'ledge' name originates.

back in the mid-'70s my ol' buddy Rich P. walked me around this neighborhood and introduced me to its secret spots. far and away the best for Italian beef sandwiches--the longest and the cheapest too--was on the southeast corner of Taylor & May - I believe that street address would be 1119 west taylor. I made special trips there often, they were worth going miles out of your way for, but in
