There is a plaque commemorating Farrell on the front of one of his boyhood homes at 5704 S. Indiana (SW corner of 57th and Indiana - from the side of the building looking west, you can see directly to the John Raber house). Also, Farrell's parish was St. Anselm's, 61st and Michigan, which is still operating as a Catholic church.

I remember a very busy one downtown, maybe on Wabash? I'm sure someone will recall this one. It was in the early '80's when I went there. A lot of bowling alleys had arcades. I remember going to Gateway Lanes on North Avenue and Narragansett and to Stryker Lanes in Berwyn on Harlem just south of Roosevelt.

The author Saul Bellow worked at the Chicago/Ashland Goldblatts growing up. He lived at 2200 W. Cortez.

Some facts about the Mecca: (1) Gwendolyn Brooks wrote an entire book-length poem about Black life in the Mecca, "In the Mecca" (1968). (2) Life Magazine (1951) and Harper's (1950) each featured the Mecca in a major story as a symbol of urban decline. (3) Mies van der Rohe's Crown Hall is built on the site of the Mecca.

In the 1970's I went to an ice cream parlor called Dr. Jazz for a childrens' birthday party. It was located on Montrose just west of Ashland. I don't remember much about it other than that I found it interesting. On the west side of the street in the 5900 block of N. Western, there is a single, thin pole standing in the parkway. It is visible on Google Streetview - it is between the red pickup and the silver car parked along the west side of the street. It is not a light pole (too thin).
