I came across an advertisement for Simpson Brothers (the featured sidewalk stamp/plaque that's shaped like a clover) in an 1898 building trade magazine. The printed company logo is the same as the plaque. Simpson Bros, Incorporated 1894, Phone Main 883 Cement walks, concrete combined curb & gutter, rock ashphalt floors and pavements

Hi Bill, Just curious, do you know when St. Paul congregation left the church on the Midway and went to the Blackstone building? The congregation that's now in the Blackstone building (Mt. Pleasant MB Church) has been there since 1951, according to their website. Hyde Park Day School is now in the St. Paul Midway building, although they're moving to a new facility on 63rd & Ingleside so i

I meant to add earlier...up until a few years ago, there was another structure from the Selig property still standing (since turned into condos). It was at the rear of a used-car lot on Western, a strange brick structure that looked like a guard tower, sort of situated in the middle of the property by the alley. I'll post a photo of it, if I can find it...

Diogenes - funny you mention a rehearsal space. In the mid-80s, my brother had an equally awful rehearsal space in a building just west of the Martin on Armitage, between the two railroad viaducts. It's now a driveway for the Best Buy. ChiTownJim - the Medill Incinerator was just SW of Fullerton and Ashland. I think they did a segment on it on 'Wild Chicago'. It was replaced with a recyclin

Hi Murph, Here's an undated postcard shot: Walther Memorial Hospital It was at 1116 N. Kedzie, closed in 1987. The building is still there, not sure what it's being used for though.

Still trying to figure out where those columns and capitals came from... There was a retail building on the NW corner of North and Artesian that was there at least through 1988 (replaced by a Walgreens). The '29 Polks Directory has the Lieberman-Nathan Dry Goods store listed there. Directly to the north of that building, the Humboldt el line ran over the alley, and in the same aerial photos

Good question. There's a still-standing large brick at roughly 43rd and Halsted that looks like one of the additions, based on old aerial photos; perhaps only the original Amphitheater structure was demolished in 1999?

Tom, The church building is still there, now housing the Cosmopolitan Church Of Prayer. The school buidling has mostly been demolished, but for some reason there's still a segment of the building left standing mid-block. The brick wall and iron gate still surrounds the property.

Just to add... In 1925, the Pershing Hotel's lounges and ballroom were run by Al Tierney, who previously ran the Auto Inn on 35th Street (which became the Plantation Cafe). I'm unsure if this was the same Al Tierney who was the American League president. Another of Capone's associates in Woodlawn was a nightclub owner named Al Quadbach, who owned the Granada Cafe at 67th and Cottage Grove,

On occasion a poker chip from the Southland Club shows up on eBay. Billy Skidmore's mansion is still standing up in Chain-O-Lakes. A colorful character, for certain; he was partners with Sam Giancana in the plan to consolidate the policy games in the Black Belt but died in prison before he got to see his cut. It's interesting that Skidmore, associated with the North Side Gang, had a club no

The Park District website has a history of Maplewood Park, and in part says that the park was established on Bd of Ed property in 1948, but doesn't mention when the Bancroft building was demolished. My mother attended the Sabin branch of Tuley for her first year (1950) but doesn't recall another branch of Tuley aside from that. I hope you can share the photos with us!

The streetcar tracks in the background are heading up to the Polk Street Bridge, which led west across the river. Here's a link to a 1947 photo of the Wells side of Grand Central, along with a photo from the same spot in 2012. Grand Central, 1947

The Mickleberry Meat plant used to be at 801 W. 49th Place. There was a massive explosion and fire there in 1968 which killed nine people including four firefighters. Here's a YouTube video of some of the fire footage: Mickleberry Fire, 1968 Not sure what occupied the site in the subsequent years.

If I'm not mistaken, I think that area would be considered South Shore, or maybe Avalon Park. For the most part, the borders of Woodlawn proper are 60th St to the north, 67th to the south, and from King Drive to the lakefront, but that doens't mean a lot - I see north Woodlawn sometimes listed as 'south Hyde Park', or the small area of houses just east of Oakwoods Cemetery listed as Woodlawn. It was renovated a few years ago and is owned by the Archdiocese Of Chicago, who run it as the Cardinal Meyer Center. There was a later addition to the building on its south which was replaced with new construction, but the style was kept close to same as the original building.

Was it Bookseller's Row? There was also Guild Books but that was across the street from Wax Trax.

Hi Tom, I actually read it a couple of years ago on the Maroon website - it's a great piece! I'm not an old-timer by any means but I do have a great interest in the history of Woodlawn.

It's a very long shot, but you might check with the alderman's office for some sort of permission. Good luck!
