Another interesting character to come out of Englewood was the evangelist A.W. Tozer. He was the pastor of a church at 65th and Loomis for years, and did not become famous for his writings until after he passed away. I believe the name of the church he pastored was the Englewood Alliance Church, but I am not sure. The church is still standing, but under a different name and congregation. In an

Even though we lived out near Addison & Harlem, my parents did a lot of shopping in my father's old neighborhood, specifically around North and Crawford. Our doctor was located over the Tiffin Theater, and shopping would usually be incidental to doctor's office visits. I still remember all of the pinkish neon signs, with the flashing lights, on a brown background that used to be all over the

It was kind of funny, the city paved our alley in the 1960's, all concrete and lights and all, but the street in front remained just blacktop with gravel on the sides, and no curbs until much later. I don't think the street was paved until after 1970. This is the northwest side.

God Forbid that you come home with anything but McLaughlin's Manor House Coffee. After they went out of business, Stewart's became the brand of choice. Going through my dad's stuff in the basement, I found an old one pound coffee can full of nuts and bolts from Hixon's Coffee. Never been able to find out anything about this company.

I love that picture. Note the tavern with Berghoff Beer, and the Pixley and Ehlers restaurant. I used to run through that intersection years ago and even ten or fifteen years ago it looked nothing like that.

There is a guy who works out at my gym, maybe a little older than me, who says he was one of the original founders of Rolling Stone records. He no longer has any interest in it, but I should ask him more about it.
