You can check nearby churches for baptismal records. If she was a Catholic, she would have been baptised at one of these three parishes. You might try local schools also.

Not to get too far off topic here, but being from Edgewater, I'm more familiar with the east extremity of Bryn Mawr. Edgewater Beach Apts., A-B CTA station, Bryn Mawr Theater (admission was still 60 cents through the 1970's), Hellas Gyros (still there, still the best), and Stoyas Pharmacy. Here's a photo circa 1970 looking east across Broadway:

A church across the street from another church? Let me guess: Ss. Cyril & Methodius is Orthodox (or Eastern rite) and Nativity BVM is Roman Catholic.

I remember Dr. Jazz being there for years but sadly, I never actually went into the place. I'm a little more familiar with it's sister outfit, Sally's Stage, because I had a cousin who was one of the roller skating waitresses there. Doctor Jazz/Sally's Stage

Chop Suey at Lincoln and Ashland in 1917. (See top of the building right under the Edelweiss sign) Also, get a load of the shingle for the Hall Bros. Dentist across the street.

My first job was with the Edgewater News Agency delivering the Daily News in the afternoons and eventually the Sun-Times and Tribune in the mornings. In high school I worked for Mid-West truck and trailer rental on north Clark Street. Then LaManna Pharmacy (apparently a short time after rjmachon was employed there). When I was 15 I was hired by the Dominick's at 6009 N Broadway and I stayed there

Somewhat off-topic (well, entirely off-topic I guess), I remember when Johnny Carson would make jokes with not-so-vague references to organized crime, he would often cite a fictional place called "Vinnie Abruzzi's Little Touch of Newark".

At Mass this morning, the priest mentioned that St. John's was part of the Open House Chicago tour and that they had over 500 visitors yesterday. It then occurred to me that I never came back to this thread with photos of our restoration (which more or less finished last year). There's plenty of photos of both the interior and exterior on the parish website. For some nice shots of the re-painted v

In the 60's there was a candy store near our school called "Roy's Corner" (unofficially, I think) at the corner of Granville and Greenview. Once a year the Duncan yoyo guy would show up there to show off his stuff and hawk yoyos. A few years later, I met a friend of an older guy in the neighborhood who had been a Duncan yoyo champ. (I think all the demo guys wore the designation "ch

Minstrel's wasn't exclusively Blues - they also had Folk and Rock nights.

When I was a kid ours was BRiargate 4. We took it with us when we moved a few blocks away and my parents had it until they retired and moved out of the neighborhood. The common ones in our area where ARdmore 1, LOngbeah 1, RAvenswood 8, HOllycourt 5, and ROgers Park 4. I remember an occasional BIttersweet and UPtown as well. I always wondered what the location scheme was. They seem to be area spec

The one bona fide famous person from Edgewater is Clayton Moore of Lone Ranger fame who grew up on Glenwood near Devon. Other "one time" residents include Johnny Weissmuller who's family lived on Granville near Broadway for a time when he was young, and Jim "Fibber McGee" Jordan who was living near the same intersection when his radio career took off in the mid 20's. That was short-lived and may have become independant at some point. Eventually it closed and was torn down to make way for a Del Rey Farms grocery which was eventually transformed into an Osco.

There was a Millionaire's Club in Edgewater on the southwest corner of Granville and Broadway into the early 70's. Was it related to the other two spoken of here. Was the Millionaire's Club some sort of chain or gimmick of some sort?

Gary's Cycle Shop on the 6100 block of north Clark Street has been family owned and operated since 1948 and has a steelr reputation among all who patronize it. It's a super small store front that has served my Edgewater neighborhood since a decade before I was born. The current owner bought it from Gary in the 50's and assumed the name "Gary" himself for the sake of continuity (few peopl
