Interesting...it looks like the Talman/Diversey condo development calls itself the Borden Dairy Commons, but it looks like the same building that I remember being the Dad's Root Beer plant.

Great images! It appears that St. Mary hospital and nearby St. Elizabeth hospital (where my mother worked while attending Tuley HS) were consolidated by Resurrection. The old St. Elizabeth facility is still there.

I know of two still-standing Bowman Dairy buildings; one is adjacent to the Kennedy on Kostner (there was a revolving sign for Jug Barbeque Sauce and Pride Of Spain Olives next to the building), and the other is at 41st and State. Are there any others still around? There was another where Ed Debevic's is now, but that's obviously been gone a long time. There's also a former Borden plant on Lo

I had relatives that lived on Melrose and Washtenaw, next to the Grebe Shipyard, where the cousins and I would sneak into every so often. The Bally Pinball factory was there too, on the corner of Belmont and Washtenaw. When they moved from that facility, the cool juggling-man logo sign disappeared, which was mounted on the Belmont side facing west: They used the same logo on their machine

On Harlem Ave. just south of Higgins, there's an old A&P store on the east side of the street. It's vacant now (I think it was a Saxon when I was a kid), and all the signage on the tower is gone, leaving a ghost of the old A&P logo.

There's what looks like a former Henry's on Western just south of Roscoe. The sign looks similar, at least. There was also one in Des Plaines on Rand Road. There's one still around, in Michigan: http://www.henryshamburgers.com/

Great screen shots. The last one looks like something out of an Algren book. I've seen matchbooks for Pete's Steaks floating around the internet; seems to have been on Block 37.

Wow, what a list - very cool! I attended Camelot Pre-School, on Bryn Mawr across from Peterson Elementary. It was in the late '70s so I don't know the exact address but it may be 3342 W., which looks like it's still in use as a daycare facility.

The Forum is also mentioned in the book 'Black Metropolis' being used as a dance hall, but one that attracted 'undesirable elements'. The Tyson was used in 'Backdraft' while it was still abandoned. Seems that it was always the tallest building in the area.

Lilac Farms! It was abandoned by the time I was around, but I do remember the empty hulk being demolished for a Dominick's. Treasure Island is still around; they recently took over the old Hyde Park Co-Op. Here's a photo of the Farmers Market store on Elston: Farmers Market I think the garden center across the street still goes by that name, but the main store became a Butera. My mo

I wonder if the Casino Moderne was preceded by a place called the Cocoanut Grove Cafe, which was at the same address in 1928. Speaking of Sun Ra and Woodlawn, there is a film from 1959 called 'The Cry Of Jazz' that features him and his band playing at Budland, and also has some great nighttime footage of 63rd. One of the liquor stores visible in the Alinsky photo briefly flashes on screen. Ho

Don't forget the racetrack at 61st and Cottage Grove - it actually came before the Fair building boom, but closed by 1905 after it garnered the wrath of the temperance movement. The stables still exist and are being renovated for use by the DuSable Museum. If you string it all together, Woodlawn had about a 90-year stretch of being a big entertainment district. Even by the time 'Monkey Hust

I'm really surprised that the cupola is still intact on the corner. Things like that are usually the first to disappear. They've been vacant and gray forever, it seems...

The 1930 photograph is actually a view looking north (the photograper most likely standing in front of the Strand Hotel), so the turret building is on the NE corner. You can see the same building in the photo that looks south on Cottage Grove (the turret is on the left side of the photo). The building on the SW corner is the former Washington Park National Bank building which probably replace

By the way, does anyone remember or even know the name of this dance hall on 63rd & Drexel? I've seen passing mention of a hall where local musicians would rehearse before going into the studio (and it was obviously popular enough to hold dances hosted by DJ Lucky Cordell), but not much else. The building on the southwest corner of 63rd and Woodlawn is the sole remnant of Woodlawn's heyday along the stretch of 63rd from Stony Island to Cottage Grove; the land holds either relatively new construction or sits vacant. Here's a view of the northwest corner of 63rd and Woodlawn before the pre-Fair building boom: 63rd & Woodlawn, NW

Interesting stuff. That intersection has some great buildings. Also, interesting video. It was nice to see a glimpse of LaRoc's Drive In (at the 2:57 point, where the bank building is now) - they had good chili.

I'm surprised the building on the western corner has been empty and gray for so long. The Outfit had a big presence in that area; a lot of the older Outfit guys grew up around Grand and Ogden, and Jack McGurn was killed a bit farther north, in a bowling alley at Milwaukee and Chicago.

There are a couple of remnants of the Jackson Park line; at University, the concrete bases for the station steps are still around, and at 65th and State there's a construction yard that has stubs of the old El support being used as fence posts. The insulators for the overhead streetcar lines are still mounted to the ICRR viaduct at 63rd and Dorchester on its east side.
