222psm, Frank Brozak WAS a cigar mfr. He might have also had a retail cigar store out of that building. I also looked up the 1759 W. 21st St address in the 1929 Polk directory and it is listed as Mrs. Anna Sandowski Meats. It may have become a tavern by the WWII time period of Jared's photo. bwalsh, to identify a photo you MUST have something, anything, that you could use to identify it.

222psm, the photo would have been cooler to me if it WAS that building at 1902 S. Throop! I found this cigar box at a Berwyn estate sale for a buck! Would have been cool to display the box with the photo in my "museum room." 1902 S. Throop http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=1902+S.+Throop+chicago&sll=41.854093,-87.67097&sspn=0.0074

bwalsh, 26th St. a.k.a. the Little Village area does not have buildings that old (the ones shown across the street in the photo). I immediately recognized the area as Pilsen. In this case the photo was taken on the south west corner of the Pilsen neighborhood at 21st & Wood. The exact shot was taken standing on Wood St. looking slightly N.E. at the corner of 21st St. Here is a link.

I found the exact location a few minutes after Jared posted the photo. I was curious if he was going to sell the photo.

It's the Chicago way Capitan. Bulldoze over everything, put expressways in the middle of every cool immigrant neighborhood in Chicago, wipe out more neighborhoods to expand universities, and issue every Tom, Dick, and Harry demo permits to knock over architectural treasures for a "Mc Condo." Hey, it's all in the name of "progress" right?

Here is an image from that neighborhood. 633 N. Ogden Ave. ca. 1954. The whole scene is gone now having been razed for the expressway. Here is the text I found with it. This is an original large-format (4"x5") acetate negative of the scene where Chicago mobster Charles "Cherry Nose" Gioe was murdered by hitmen from fellow mobster Joey Glimco. It shows Angelo's Pizzeria re

Cool. The reason I ask is because I have a buddy that libved and still owns a building on 18th & Harding. He also had one on 17th & Harding that I sold for him a few years ago. I have a VERY cool real photo postcard of the 1600 block of Harding circa 1909.

Artista, you mentioned before that you lived on Harding. Now I see that you mention that you lived near North Ave. What exact block did you live on?

Here is my Berwyn sign in its new home! It had some green paint on the black mount and some on the sign itself that the city must have slopped all over it when painting poles decades ago. I cleaned it up with some 0000 steel wool and denatured alcohol. The paint came right off with some scrubbing leaving the enamel perfect underneath. Some anchors for the wall and screws with washers and wala!

Holy cow, I just realized something Dave. I think YounginChicago is refering to NORTH Spaulding not S. Spaulding which would be Little Village. It is odd to hear someone refrence a north side street as "26th & Spaulding," at least to a southwestsider like me. I tought only us soult side guise did dat.

Cizek Menswear was on the corner of 26th & Spaulding until somewhat recently. Kaplans Department Store was at 3409 W. 26th St (SW cor. of Homan). Is that what one you were thinking about? Klaus-Kaplans? Sounds somewhat the same. Lurie bros. Dept. Store was at 3535 W. 26th St (SW cor. of Drake). Zemskys, which is still in business, is just west of that.

Artista, here is a rare real photo postcard from my collection circa 1910 of the Ruzicka (Czech or Slovak surname) Drug Store building that stood in the place of the bank before it was built. Note the fire house behind the building which still stands today but serves some other purpose. Here is sort of the same view today. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&

Quite an area. It is amazing that EVERYTHING is gone. Probably until the new millenium, the area was a ghost town. Shame.
