the show provides a rare glimpse, literally hundreds of views of what Chicago looked like 50 or so years ago....and what the north side looked like pre-Kennedy Expressway...captured on film for posterity...pretty valuable footage considering how now, 50 yrs later, most of the parts of Chicago that gave it character and made it a real city are vanishing or vanished.

You see a lot of that in "Msquad" where the background people in the scene are watching the filming. Since they didn't have permits, they couldn't move people out of the area and move people out of their businesses. I have a theory (though I can't be positive) that some of the locations used for MSquad were abandoned and earmarked for demolition to make way for the X-pressway. It's

That's a great pix there...I always thought that the riots were more 68', but then again, everything later 60's is kind of a blur to me. Present view of Division and Damen...there's the Rainbo Club a bit south on Damen, historic tavern and Nelson Algren hangout...former strip club/burlesque house..the four story on the SW corner is surprisingly fairly close to original, except that the entire

sorry, my bad..the talman/diversey complex is the Borden Commons, not Bowman. there was a facility built by Bowman in 1910 @ 66th and Wentworth, but that looks like it has been gone since the 60's...

there is condo development on the site of a fairly large Bowman's Dairy facility @ Talman and Diversey...2800 N Talman...adjacent to the Kennedy...not sure if the buildings are conversions or the site was razed... I've seen a building at the corner of 103rd and Vincennes in Beverly with a Bowman's sign hidden behind a billboard...not sure if that was an old advertisement or the actual building

it doesn't add up...as you can see from the pix, the land was spared. What didn't survive was the church. The other possible explanation is that the xpressway split the neighborhood and those that had any allegiance to the old Erie and May church were relocated. <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/20205384@N03/4803941572/" title="corner of Erie and May - Chicago - presen

I know much has been discussed concerning Ogden Avenue here, but I couldn't pass up posting this pix I discovered in my book collection. It continually amazes how dramatically the dismantling of Ogden Ave changed the landscape of the near north side. This is the intersection of Weed St and Ogden in 1965...the CTA brown line is overhead. The current site of this photo is a youth baseball field.

that's some pretty damn impressive detective work, sir... the more I look at that pix, the more I recognize it to be similiar to the corner/neighborhood/tavern/banquet hall, from my memories of growing up in the Back of the Yards. The bar area would be be nearer to the front entrance, with two additional side entrances (in this case along Wood St)..in the rear would be a dance floor and possib

judging by the autos and the fact that one of the guys is wearing military garb, the most likely date is somewhere in the 40's. Tomek's is a very common Polish name. it's anybody's guess as so it could literally be any of the Chicago Polish neighborhoods from the 40's. Now whether Tomek's is a bar, deli, restaurant, store, etc..is anyone's guess. other clues might be 1) venetian blinds 2) Bel

It's interesting how candy and chewing gum became a very vital part of the economy in Chicago, back in the day. The 1905 Directory of Chicago Confectioners lists almost 200 candy or candy related industries, probably due to the easy access and proximity to corn syrup, a vital ingredient in confection. Among those operating in 1900 was Hershey-Lancaster Caramel Co, @ 119 W Harrison, a descendan

groundbreaking cop/detective TV filmed on location, mostly in Chicago in the late 50's..lot's of views of vintage Chicago here's the intro (1957)...Lee Marvin (Dt. Frank Ballinger)..ends up on Lower Wacker with a view looking up at the Mich Ave bridge and the Wrigley Building. Supposedly, Mayor Daley was miffed at a episode that referred to "crooked cops", and may be one of the reason
