Hi, Tom Wow! I came across your post from a couple of years ago under OLD BEER BRANDS with an ad showing the Atlas Brewery - in Czech, no less! Do you have any idea about the year that was done? I've been researching my family history focusing on my great-grandfather John Kralovec, who was one of the founders of Atlas (nee Bohemian Brewing). Unfortunately, I've come up short on any kind

Thanks for all the references! I also came across another good possibility for where my GGF's daughter may have been placed. Cook County Kinderheim was merged into Lutheran Social Services at some point, but according to a history I found, as of 1909 it was an option for placement for wards of the Cook County Juvenile Court. Anyone know anything about that institution, or know of a relative w

Thanks for your replies. I did see the Chicago Encyclopedia article, thanks. The problem is that in searching the Probate Court file for my GGF's daughter, there is no direct mention of a particular facility, just "Boarding School." In doing further research, however, into what options might have been available, my leading candidate at this point is the Illinois Industrial School fo

In researching my great-grandfather's family history I found out that in 1920 his ex-wife was declared insane, and as a result his daughter became a Ward of the State. Under the auspices of the Juvenile Court she was placed in what was referred to in a document I found as a "Boarding School." Has anyone ever found any references to, or know anything about, these types of facilities

Hi, Davey7 Might be a long haul here. I've checked the LOC, and they had archived issues, but not 1892/93 which is what I need! They referred me to the Harvard Business School library for those issues, but Harvard says they don't have those issues in their holdings, despite what the LOC found. Aargh! Calling all magazine hoarders in the Chicago area! Any possibility someone has a stash o

My dad took me there many times in the late 50's. I remember the Fun House, the shooting range, the train ride, the bumper cars, and the miniature golf course. And, of course, the Bobs! Maybe it was an urban myth, but my Dad's favorite story about the Bobs was of a man who (during the time he was going there as a young man) was goofing off and stood up while on the the ride, and was decapit

I'm doing family history on my great-grandfather John Kralovec, specifically on the house he built for himself, 2102 S Avers Ave, which is featured in the Landmarks Commission FIVE HOUSES ON AVERS. It probably would have been featured in an issue of American Contractor magazine in 1892, but I can't locate an archive with issues going back that far. Chicago History Museum only has back to 1898.
